Default Target trigger and hammer on 15-2

I was shooting a 1972 Model 15-2 this afternoon at the range and noticed it had the target trigger and hammer. Were these standard on the Model 15, or optional.

I took off the grips and noted the gun had been back to S&W in April, 1975.

This revolver belonged to my buddy's grandfather, who was a deputy sheriff here in NC. I got to thinking the gun came with the standard configuration and he sent it in to get upgraded.

Here it is in the center of the pic. There is considerable holster wear. I think it was the gentleman's duty gun as it came in a battered duty holster.

It's pictured with a 1972 Colt Detective Special. My buddy has 2 from his grandfather- one nickel and one blued- and my Model 27-2.

The 15-2 was available with either the standard or target hammer/trigger. The only way to to tell which a gun shipped with is to sent for a factory letter. The US Air Force ordered Model 15's with target hammers and triggers as their standard issue.

Back in the day they could be ordered from the factory that way or sent back to the factory to be upgraded. A factory letter would most likely answer your questions. Sounds like a nice piece, congrats!

As a side note, that was also a very popular configuration for police officers back in the day too. Seems odd though, because in my experience we were always trained to shoot double action and NEVER cock the weapon for single action use. The target hammer would be fine but the target trigger is not conducive to double action shooting.........

A few years ago, I went to a dealer here who catalogued several used M15 2". I chose one made in 1984 over older pinned models because it had the target hammer and trigger (and it was tighter too).

A snubby with target sights, target hammer and target trigger: just to much!!!

The fact that this snubby is the same configuration that those ordered by the USAF for the OSI added to the "cool factor".

as a xcop way back when, we bought the 15 with tt and th. we were able to buy guns from a police supply place, usually Galls Inc, and they were usually bought because they were good at the range. you had to fire 4 to 500 rounds of wad cutter and the larger trigger helped with the stability holding the gun when your hand was getting tired or sweaty. you will probably see a lot of them from the 70's but they are rare cause most cops still have then laying in the bottom of their gun cab. mike
