Model 28-2, 4 inch Highway Patrolman. Price Check Please.
This 4 inch model is circa 1975 based on the serial number, N1972xx. Original target stocks. A little rough overall with some minor pitting in a few small spots near rollmarks on barrel and frame. Nothing that wouldn't clean up with some oil and some #0000. Timing is perfect. Endshake is good. Bore looks good, but needs cleaning. No imprinting on recoil shield. A little loose on lock up but not a dealbreaker. Overall a nice shooter. Shop asking $595.00 Yes, no, maybe? Thanks for any input. c good

I know 28s have gone up in price, but $595 seems a little to much. I would keep looking.

I started typing a response, then realized you are in California (So Kal). Due to the many state restrictions, that may be a decent price. I know that price would be considered high, in my area, for a M28-2 in the conditon you describe, but you are not in my area.

No more than $500, and that is really on the outside of what I would pay.

The "S" one(1960) I got a few weeks ago was $391 OTD.
But you do have to look around.

The gun that you describe.
I would not really even give it serious consideration. Much less at the price that you list. Keep looking.

That's pretty pricey. I picked up an earlier and nicer M-28-2 than described for $350 about three months ago.

This looks to be another case of artificial inflation regarding older Smiths. For the gun you describe I wouldn't go a penny over $400.

I just got lucky and bought, from a pawn shop, what appears to be an unfired 6" 28-2 (1972) out-the-door, for $400. The 2 LGS, in my area, have a half dozen priced in the $599-$699 range....none with boxes.
This is what someone was willing to pay. Started at .01 and has a "10 minute" rule, so there's no sniping.

I think JCS&W is right. Too high for most of the country, but you have to consider that this gun is in California.
Since I don't live there, I can't really say, but others have posted about how you can't bring an older S&W into the state (something about they can't pass "drop tests" ?)
In my area, it would sell quickly for $450. It would probably eventually sell for $550 in a shop.
I already have enough shooter-grade M28s, so I would probably pass. Your situation may be different. N-Frame .357s with 4" barrels do not come along every day, so you may want to consider how much you would like one and how long it will take to locate another in better condition and / or for less money.

Kalifornia gun - always will be more.
I just wish some of these guys who "wouldn't pay over $XXX for that" would sell me theirs for that price. No takers so far . . .

If you want a laugh, look at Gunbroker and check out all the ridiculous prices on refinished nickel or brushed chrome model 28's. One genius even posted the label side of the box after I asked him to, finish: Blue. LoL. Some of them get defensive when you ask they why they are listing fake guns for north of $800

Florida price comparison
At gun shows and lgs here in Central Florida, asking prices for Model 28-2s continue to rise. Average for a 4" in VG condition would be $500+, and nice 6" versions are $550-650. I was fortunate to pick up a nice 4" M28-2 a couple of years ago for $400, and a 4" M29-2 for $470, but I haven't seen prices like that lately. Seems that prices for all N-frames are escalating.

That price is too high. For that price, I'd rather spend an extra $100 and get the brand new Model 586.
That being said, I am picking up a heavily used Model 28 later this week from a local gunshop.
$350.

I bought my 28 no dash on GB last year (6") for $450. It is about 95%.
I never would have considered one at the $600 mark in the condition you describe. There are nice ones out there cheaper. Be patient, but be ready to pounce! Good luck on your hunt. Bob

One thing you have to say about M28s is that there were a heck of a lot of them made! So if you do have questions or doubts about one, you can be sure there are a lot more out there!
The flip side of this is of course that they are popular with both shooters and collectors, so nice ones usually come with a hefty price tag. In other words, if you want a really nice one, expect to pay for it.
Since they were designed as a no frills duty gun, there are a lot of them that show "honest wear" but are none the less excellent mechanically. So if you want something to shoot and are less concerned with looks, you will have a lot to chose from at more attractive prices.

28-2 Price
Hi,
My first post!
I just picked up a 28-2 that looks to be unfired with not a mark on it for $550. I thought that was a little high, but when I see what new guns are going for, it is probably not a bad deal.

In Southern California that is a fair LGS price. As a matter of fact, if you are really interested in it don’t wait around because it won’t wait for you!

I gotta recant my last post. The Model 28-2 I picked up is inn great condition. It does show "honest wear" in the form of slight holster wear, but it just looks distinguished. Mechanically, this thing is rock solid!
In lock up, the cylinder is tight and near unmoving. Much tighter than my Ruger GP100....and I loooove cocking the hammer back. It sounds so crisp and like glass.
The only thing it needs is some decent wood grips instead of the hogues they come with.
Previous owners are both dead (old age), so it looks like I'll be the new caretaker. For $350, it feels like asword steal.
