I picked up a mod 13-1 with target grips that had gold/brass medallions. They showed no wear, so assume they were original.

When did S&W use these brass medallions. Any specific models?

thanks

Charlie

I've seen them look that way after someone varnished the stocks and let the varnish dry on the medallions.

I don't have the answer, but I can complicate the question. My pre-war Outdoorsman (1937), post-war pre-10 M&P (1947ish), and 36-1 (1971) all have brass medallions. Polished with Brasso, they all appear to have been manufactured the same day even though their ages differ by almost 35 years. However, the medallions on my 19-2 (1964) are "silver." There's no built-up varnish on these and they don't shine after a Brasso treatment. However, 0000 steel wool makes them look like pewter.

BTW, all grips are original to the guns.

newer grips ... Not pre war.

I would think they are re-finished. And when sanded the medallions lost their (nickle?) finish.
But they look nice.

Charlie, that looks like old varnish that's gone yellow over the medallions, pretty common with refinished stocks. The checkered area on yours shows us that the stocks have been refinished at some point. Nice-looking wood, though. You might be able to scrape the varnish off the medallions with some careful work using a knife tip or something similar.
