It is generally believed (including by S&W, I think), that it is NOT the ammo that is the real cause of that. Rather, the barrel was overtorqued on installation. Ordinarily, S&W will replace the gun, although I don't know what they could replace a Model 12 with.

That just sickend me, what a beutiful specimen of a model 12 ruined.

I had one that looked just like that, but was unfired. Smith and Wesson looked at it, and offered to replace it with a model 10, and for $35.00 more, a model 64. That was a number of years ago, though...

I agree, although it is possible that the shot(s) only has "completed" the amount of stress required to break the frame, most of which was provided by the overtorquing.
The replacement is impossible, the gun is in Argentina: a dual process of ex/import is very expensive.

What a shame, it looks terrible, but "ruined"? I'm not 100% convnced. I've asked before-- has anyone here ever shot a cracked airweight and had it fail? Does shooting put that much stress on that part of the frame? Also, instead of scrapping the gun or delegating it to display-only use, I wonder if it would be possible to salvage it by clamping it in a padded vise and heliarc welding that crack? If the bead was too big, it could be machined down afterward. The anodizing might go to hell, but a one of the spray-on finishes could take care of that.
