So I went to my LGS today to pick up a few reloading supplies.

He happened to have recently taken in some "Barrett-Bait" as we have come to affectionately call it.

The piece in question is a 6" 17-2. I resisted the compelling urge to fondle this little .22. I have been wanting to add a descent K-22 to my small yet growing collection of Smith's for quite some time now. While I did not handle it, it looks to be in well used, yet well cared for condition. I would say finish is about 97%. Some wear in the usual places you would expect to see from carrying and shooting. Looked to have the original target grips on it as well, with the serial number stamped on the butt.

I have looked here and figured out the -2 were made from 1961 to 1967. I am sure this would be a sweety and I am trying to behave but I can't get this thing out of my head.

I know there is no shortage of "what's this gun worth" threads. But, I just have to know the opinions of those who know better than me approximately what this is worth. Dealer has $700 plus tax on the tag and he has always had pretty fair prices. Most times they take a few bucks off for me being that I am a regular customer of his. I would suspect if I were to buy it, I could probably get him down to about $675.

Didn't handle it, so no pics unfortunately.

So, what say you? 6" M17-2 in 95% or better condition??

Thanks guys...

I just sold a 99% pre 17 from 1956 for $800. Maybe I sold it too cheap. It did sell within 10 minutes of listing it on a local forum.

Diamond targets: Yes

Box, docs and tools: I do not know. Didn't ask.

It seems like a fair price to me based on what I see most older m17's going for.

But I have not yet decided if I am going to go after this. I know I joke about Mrs. RIDE-RED being a little miffed if I were to just buy this thing, but the truth is, we just don't have the financial freedom to throw around $700 here, $1000 there. Not complaining or crying about "social justice" lol! That's just the situation. Plus with Christmas fast approaching, I would rather at least make sure my kids get their Christmas first before running right down and spending money on another handgun, albeit a nice one that's on my list of gotta haves...

When I figured out roughly how old it is, that made it that much harder for me to walk away. I'm really starting to develop a soft spot for the old classics...

I just dropped $200 and a Ruger 22-250 for a 17 no dash with the wrong grips yesterday at a local gun show. They are pretty pricey guns when you can find them. Everyone talke of how well they shoot tho.

Twig.

Look-there will be other Christmases down the line but you may never see another nice 17-2. I say snag it and give the kids oranges and nutmeats like in the olden days. If you feel the need-make them something out of wood-like clothespin rubber band shooters-remember it's not spending money on them that counts-it's spending time.

Several years ago I paid $600 for a Model 17-3 (1977). Came with
target trigger, hammer and stocks. Blueing around 96%. Very
accurate and fun to shoot.

Mine was $700 last year in the box with all the trimmings, TT, TH, TS plus the original numbered Magnas:

Swallowed hard at the time, but smiling now.
