when was my stainless chiefs special made? ser. #68xxx. i have three consecutive ser. #'s, all nib. are they worth more together or separately? thanks.

Welcome! The SN is on the bottom of the grip frame, and a five-digit number without letters does not fit with model 60 numbering. Have a look at this post so you can give us more information:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/326457-identify-your-gun.html

A collector may be willing to pay more than 3X the value of a single gun for three consecutive numbered guns, but my guess is your potential buyer's pool would be smaller due to the cost.

A model 60 from 1965-1968 should have a 6 digit s/n, 1969-1983 should have an R-prefix s/n, post 1983 have a three-letter-prefix s/n.

This one is from 1966. S/N 4784xx The s/n on the butt is blurred out but its a 6 digit #.

Also diamond grips indicate a 1st or 2nd year gun then the grips change to a plain walnut magna grip.

thanks, everybody. the # is R68xxx.

i'm new to this site, but i love it.

Your model 60 for sale

This one is from 1966. S/N 4784xx The s/n on the butt is blurred out but its a 6 digit #.

I saw your ad today [2/10/15] and checked the sn in SCSW and it was bugging the heck out of me. "How could it have a 3 digit sn?"

So I decided to do a search and found your post. This is a great forum , you can learn something new everyday.

Model 60 1974-77 Serial Number

I have a guy offering me a really nice model 60 that belonged to his dad. Serial number R1298xx. I have the most recent Standard Catalog but can only determine that it was produced between 1974 to 1977. It has the pinned barrel. Can someone be more specific on the exact year if you have a better source?
Thanks in advance!
