I have two model 64s 3" RB and one Model 15 2" SB that came from the CA DMV investigations unit. Very happy with them. I worked for DMV for a few years though not in investigations.

TO RANDY BILL. Tried to send you a PM but it doesn't want to work. I worked for the CAL DOC for 24 years, much of that as a firearms instructor, armorer and rangemaster. I have now been retired for 19 years. CDC only just recently switched to .40 cal automatics, due to ammunition costs rather than anything else. Prison cops are sort of unusual in that hand guns are NOT our primary weapon, long guns are. The department got away from the Model 10 to the Model 64 and then recently to Glock 22. Very few individuals were issued guns. Weapons, including handguns, were issued to posts and not people. Also many were range guns and therefore got shot a LOT. Handguns issued to posts got shot almost never. Rifles and shotguns and gas guns issued to posts sometimes got shot a fair bit, depending on which posts they were issued to.

From about 1990-2010 were the salad days of police trade ins. Back in that era, I could go into my local shop and ask for a used K frame, and they would literally have plastic tote bins full of them. When I got back from Iraq in ‘05, I asked about model 10’s. He told me pick any one you want $165, $150 each for two or more. I now wish I would have bought a bunch of course. Then went to Afghanistan in 08 returned and asked the same question about 15’s another plastic bin any one $300 each.
I haven’t seen large numbers of police trades at bargain prices since.
The times above were when I lived back east where there was at least to my perception a bigger used gun market.
I have since moved to the west ( Arizona) and even seeing a single used S&W revolver in a shop is rare. And they typically ask mint condition price for average condition guns

This thread dredged up memories of gun show days in the early-mid ‘80s seeing tables full of early K frame stainless trade ins. I bought a reasonably nice Model 66 ND that has since been through all sorts of transformation, finally ending up as the donor gun for my “Project 616”. This will probably be the final iteration of this one.
I sure miss the days when you could buy cheap police trade ins, taking your choice from a table full for about $200 or so each.
