My wife is so gonna kill me
I was at the LGS this afternoon looking at another snubby (seems like I just have to have one around). Thought I had my mind made up when the guy behind the counter tells me they have a Smith coming in, in a day or so. A couple questions later and we've come to the conclusion; #1 it's an N frame and #2 it's a .357, so either a model 27 or 28. He didn't know barrel length or any specifics other than it was an older gun, in very good condition, complete with box and papers, and possibly unfired. The owner plans on trading for a Colt, and I plan on putting my name on the Smith before it's in the door.
I'm going to be in sooooo much trouble.

Do like I do in similar situations - I throw my chest out and say in my best James Bond-type voice: "Danger is my business". By the time Mrs. Double-O quits laughing, I've usually changed the subject and ducked the bullet.
Best of luck,
Dave

With my wife, laughing won't be part of the equation. Fortunately, she doesn't know where the gun safe keys are, so her Sig is safely behind bars.
Now if this gun is a 4" blued anything, it can be reasonably disguised as my 28-2. I just can't take both shooting at the same time when my wife's along.

A dozen roses with an "I love you" works wonders for damage control, just don't expect it to work too often.

I wouldn't think you would be in any trouble at all, once you have explained that you did it knowing she would want you to have it.

i just stepped in it with a 327 PC gun so... not much pity here, especially since it's a 28!

Wives can be understanding at times. A while back I came home and told my wife "I bought you a new car for Christmas". She went on and on about there was nothing wrong with her old car, we don't have the money for a new car, she really likes her old car, etc., etc. After a bit she calmed down and I showed her the 9mm Kahr pistol I purchased (knowing well she prefers her 2 1/2" Mod 66 over anything else). That's nice, she said, but I like my 66 better, so you keep it for yourself.

You have to be "Tactical" in these situations.
I've told this story before on here, but it deserves another round.
Probably a dozen years ago I went to a local gun show. Had just gotten a check and had about $700 cash. Found a really nice 3" M13-2. Paid, if memory serves, a bit over $300 for it. Probably bought some other stuff too.
Came home and the Lovely Missus P&R Fan gave me the hairy eyeball and said "so, how much did you spend?" Never answered her. Reached in my pocket and pulled out three crisp new Hundred dollar bills and said "here, this is for you". Her blue eyes lit up, she snatched the bills and walked away happy.
Yeah, it was expensive, but I didn't have to sleep with the dogs that night.
Try it. It's "Tactical", and it works.

I once broke up with a girlfriend because she asked "Why do you need another gun?" I knew immediately that relationship wasn't going anywhere.

You're not alone, gunny.
I just bought a pair of Kurac stocks for my 629 and 686 and I'm supposed to purchase another 686 this weekend...
I keep telling her, this is it for a while.

Do what I do, just bring it in the house and put it away when she is not home, she will never know. A few weeks ago my wife said to me, why don't you buy those gun's you are always looking at in the store, now that worries me, what does she want to buy now, maybe another 4000.00 sewing machine.

A month after I found a Henry lever rifle in 38/357, I found a Rossi in the same caliber to use as a trade gun. Before I could set up a trade she found it when the safe was open. Needless to say, we went to the range and she decided it fit her better, so she was going to keep it. I guess I will keep her too!

Years ago, I understood that my wife, while not discouraging my addiction, wasn't interested herself.
And I realized she didn't know much about identifying firearms. If I was carrying in a new addition, all I had to do was say something like, "this ol' thing? Had it for years. Just polished the stock...."
I figured out all I needed was one of each: a scoped rifle, a blue handgun, a 'silver' handgun, and a double barrel shotgun. Having established that I 'owned' only four firearms, I could buy, sell, carry in, carry out anything I 'needed.'
Oh sure, sometimes the scope came off the rifle, sometimes I converted a bolt action to a lever action (or made the barrel much bigger....that's for duck hunting, don'sha know). At one point, I added a 'silver' long gun. But I got away with the scam for years.
Until she finally got a peak into my safe......(sigh)
And I think that's when the jewelry started coming into the house. "Sweetie, how long have you had those big sparkly things in your ears?" "Oh....those old things?"

I guess I'm blessed: LOML loves it when I buy a gun. Lessens her guilt about her scrap booking retreats.

Wives and guns...it comes down to "need to know" and she don't need to know! Generally when I do buy a new one, I don't say a word, once it's in the house I can leave it laying out as she doesn't know one from another...if she only knew how my Colt and S&W collection has grown in the past year or so...

Seriously.... the last time my husband told me he was getting a gun, Sig 250SC - .45, I hesitated for a moment and then said, get me one too!
Time before that it, he told me he was going to get a S&W Bodyguard... wound up getting 2... his and hers...he has the semi-auto and I've got the revolver.

I am past the need point when it comes to guns. My wife understands it is my hobby and collection. It still doesn't hurt that I keep them locked behind bars and only bring one or two out at a time.

My wife enjoys and is interested in the variety of frame sizes, actions and calibers that come with this addiction. In the last 7 years she has had 4 different CCW revolvers and now even enjoys shooting .357 out of my 28-2. It is fun for her to out-shoot her sons utilizing the N frame.

My wife is always telling me to just go ahead and buy it. Last year we stopped at a shopping center with a Scheels sports store on my birthday and I was told to buy a revolver so a very nice 4in model 19 came home with me. Thay always give you a T shirt with a gun. Last time in the salesman gave her one also.

I love my wife and can alway tell when I have upset her with my handgun purchases: The sound of a cocking hammer is very audible to my range impaired ears.

Yeah but those guns are not real fun to cozy up with at night.
