Default .357's of the Model 27 Type

I'm posting this here because the majority are from this time frame. In my relatively modest collection (I say modest because I have seen the killer collections belonging to some members here) I am lucky to have acquired these. The newly purchased 3.5" -2, two 4" -2's, a 6.5" -5 (recessed cylinder), and the top of the heap (not the top of the photo), a 6" Pre-27. I am now on the hunt for the elusive 5". It is my understanding the 5" was only available on the pre-model guns. Is this correct?

I'd have to look up that answer in the SCSW. I have one 4" M27 and it's a post-2010 Classic. But it's a wonderful gun despite its youth! I love to shoot it.

I'm not sure of the manufacturing dates, but I have a 27-2 in 5" that was bought new in July 1977

The 5" was a standard catalog length until 1978 when the 4" replaced both it and the 3.5".

I don't think a -5 should have a recessed cylinder. P&R disappeared with the -3 model.

My -5 is one of the 12 Revolvers (Outnumbered) that was not finished with all the fancy stuff. It does have the recessed cylinder but no pinned barrel. It is, according to Roy one of 234 done like that. The fellow I bought it from bought it new. The box was marked Outnumbered and he had no idea what he had. For that matter neither did I until I got my letter. It came with box, et al. The right side of the barrel is unmarked and it came with the true presentation stocks with the right side cut-out for engraving.

Thanks for all the information on the 5".

Found my 27-2

This one just came from a metro Atlanta shop. There are other S&W 27 models there, but I do not recall the - numbers, barrel lengths, etc.
