This is my 2nd model 10. It has a 5 inch barrel. Pretty nice, but I don't think it's LNIB as advertised. It has the original box, papers, and tools.

The number on the grips doesn't match the gun. I think they are a little older than the gun, but might be correct? Serial number is D24432. I think this makes it a 1968 gun.

Anybody else have one with a 5 inch barrel? I gather that they are less common?

Congratulations! That is a beautiful gun. I have one and it is my favorite S&W. To me it balances well and is the most handsome length of the Model 10.

I've got a 10-5 with 5" bbl LNIB. Looks like yours but no diamond on the grips. Serial number in the D250000+ range.

Thanks for the posts.

Roy Jinks tells me that mine shipped in March of 1968 which is the year that the diamond grips were discontinued according to the SCS&W. The number on my grips is 768603. I assume the number should match the gun?

Back in the days of foot patrol the 5" pencil barrel guns were by far the most common of the bunch I understand. When cops moved into cars they found that most people had trouble with the 5" barrels while sitting down, which is (supposedly) when swivel holsters became common. After that the 4" heavy barrel became the preferred variety, both in police service and as a sock-drawer gun for citizens.

The standard barrel in 5 inch is my favorite Mod 10/M&P ...

... we hear alot about the N frames with that bbl length but not the stepchild Military & Police. :)

Here is another 5" 10-5. As SaxonPig said, not rare, but a great barrel length especially when not carried in a car. Yours seems to be in excellent condition.

I recently got this S&W military & police, five inch barrel.
I and the revolver were both made in 1945
Bill, I show two of these in that serial range that you have. They are about 730 numbers apart. Is that correct?
I believe both of them shipped in the spring (April or May) of 1946.

Me too. My favorite is shown here. Shipped in March, 1946.

A '47 5 inch
I don't think I have this one included in my research. I'll PM the questionnaire to you, if you would be so kind as to identify the features for me.
