looking at a K-frame model 65-2 S# 79176 wondering what the vintage is thanks !!

My 65-4 is from 81, it's at least older than that.

The 65-2 modification began in 1977 and was produced until 1982, when replaced by the 65-3. I would expect the serial number on this piece to be something like 2DXXXX to 9DXXXX. The number you noted doesn't make sense for this model. Please check the butt of the revolver when you see it. Best of luck.
