Default Manufacturer date for a model 29-2

I purchased it back in the early 70s and originally had a 4 inch barrel. I called the factory to order a 8 3/8" blue barrel but unfortunately, they only had the chrome so they stripped it and blued it for me. All for ridiculously low price of $27. Unfortunately the original barrel has since been lost by one of my sons. Anyway back to the original question, it is a model 29-2, serial number N 71711. That's all the digits there are. Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Thanks Paul

Was shipped in 1969-1972. Congrats!
N1 began in 1969.
N100000 shipped in 1973.

Unfortunately, the SCSW doesn't split up the three years 1969-1972.
Since 100,000 serials were over the three year period, I'd say it was the second half of those three years.
Mid to Late 1971 maybe. Or early 1972.

For 50 bucks, you can get a letter from S&W will tell you what features it had when shipped, exactly when, and to where it was shipped originally.

That sounds about right. I was actually trying to boil it down to a more specific date but I understand completely if that's not possible. I definitely appreciate the information.

Your 29-2 was most likely shipped in the first half of 1973. I base this on the several I own with a similar serial number.
