Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum as well as gun building and could use some help.

I've acquired a Smith&Wesson Model 29-2 sn: N xxxxxx . .44magnum. I am having a hard time finding parts for it. I have the frame and barrel.

Does anyone have any recommendations about where to purchase them? It seems "googling" mod 29-2 is not enough to get what I want.

Thanks!!!

You're going to have a hard time and will just have to look around.

A few years ago, S&W damaged the barrel on my 4" 29-2. I insisted that they replace the barrel. They didn't have ANY. I ended up asking around here and elsewhere and ended up buying two to make sure I had one good one. Good thing too, since one had been turned in one time too many and was unusable.

Other than people's used take-offs, a lot of what little you're going to find is tacky "tactical" or "race" type stuff. If you DO find original style, new made stuff you'll pay a hefty price for it.

29-2

it will be like building a car from the parts store, might get expensive, good luck

Welcome to the Forum Ds96.
Place and ad in the classifieds - many Members here on the Forum have buckets of parts.
Also, Ebay has MANY entire parts guns for sale. Many are not identified so you need to know what you are lookin at.
Also, your innard parts don't have to be 29-2 specific. All N frame parts of that era are interchangeable.
Don't get discouraged and be patient - that's a very cool project you have ahead of you.

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I have my work cut out for me. This may be a stupid question, but how would I know which parts are interchangeable or not?

Nothing worthwhile is easy. At least that's been my luck so far. Is there one place above another I should check? I've checked gunbroker.com regularly.

I have my doubts that the barrel is original to that frame. The -2 variation never cataloged anything less than a 4 inch barrel. Short barrels did not show up until mid 80s, well into the -3s. Good luck in your search for parts. I think they are available with a little searching and some luck.

That barrel probably is original to the frame as it looks to be pinned.

It was probably a 4"er that was cut down to 3" and the sights were re-done.

Cool by me, a 3" 29-2 is neat.

I hope he can get it built.

It's probably worth buying a rough, but complete 29-2 and harvesting it for parts.

Hi Richard,

Its been cut down to that size, its not the original size. I'm finding that I need a little luck to find parts. In my research the cylinder is no longer available thru S&W. Hopefully I can find a parts kit somewhere.

They've always said, nothing worthwhile is easy.

Yes, its a cutdown barrel. I'll do my best getting it built. The nice thing about doing it by the piece is I can do it as I can afford it. Although, not sure what a complete 29 goes for.

I would call the folks at USA Guns & Gear located in Covington, Georgia. They are very nice and have stuff that is not actually on the website. It's worth a phone call. 770-544-8075

The 29-2 was never available with a round butt either. If someone round butted that gun, make sure the serial number has not been obliterated before you put any money into the work. If it has, I don't think the gun is legal to own.
