From your serial number in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, it looks like your pistol was manufactured in the 1976-1977 time frame.
And welcome to the forums!

Welcome also! This is a .38 Military & Police Stainless Heavy Barrel (now you know why the factory went to model numbers). It is a K or medium frame revolver that was one of the standard LE sidearms of the day. It and similar guns were literally made by the millions for the military, police and of course the general public. It is just about the ideal all-around handgun for target shooting and defense for many people. Hope this is helpful.

Thank You! Definently helpful.
I did forget to ask......Can you give me an estimated value?
The gun is in excellent condition. I do not have the original box.
And if it matters I live in the Southeastern U.S.
Thanks again!

One way I use to help estimate the value is to go on GunBroker and run an advanced search on completed auctions for the last 90 days or so, looking for the model pistol I am interested in and see what they averaged selling at.

A fair cash value would be around $400 or so. Less if you sell to a dealer, of course.
