I replaced the thumb piece on my model 66 as the original was lost. The replacement thumb piece looks identical to the original but when tighten the nut the thumb piece binds up. My 66 is an older 2.5" pinned and recessed. Any help would be appreciated.

After a little time in the range today the cylinder is now hanging up a little when I open it

Check the ejector rod, if it's coming loose it will cause the cylinder to bind up when you open it. Also, if you've had the side-plate off the bottom two screws might have gotten mixed up, which would cause binding on the yoke when you open it.

It has something to do with the new thumb piece I installed

When I first tightened the nut the latch would not move. the only way it will slide is if the nut is slightly loose.

Remove the thumbpiece and check the frame. If there are scratch marks on the frame from the thumbpiece, you can relieve this by filing the underside of the thumbpiece until it moves freely.

I checked the back of the thumb piece and is not rubbing on the frame. Good advice though

I replaced one and had a problem with it rubbing on the sides of the lug that fits in the slot. A few strokes on the lug with a file cleared it right up. I also had to file the front end of the lug so the cylinder would open without catching.
