Those are beautiful grips.
There is a person on the forum that does grip repair, and his work is excellent.
I need to try and find his name for you.

Dan D "dotdsd334" does all my work
Dan has done at least a half dozen restorations like this on my grips. Very reasonable price, excellent work, and a great guy to deal with.
Examples here: Coke grip refurbished by Dan dotdsd334
Diamond Target grips refurbished by dotdsd334
Beautiful gun BTW.

I believe member VM also does grip restorations - atleast to the finish.
I'm not sure about wood restoration by VM.

There are several forum members who would do an excellent job on your stocks (those mentioned and Keith Brown). However, I doubt if they are original to your 29-2 as they were phased out in 1966. I am sure your 29-2 was shipped well after that. A serial number would help me determine what type of stocks are correct for your 29-2.

Grip type
The diamond target stocks shown are earlier and much more valuable than the later, larger target stocks. I much prefer the feel of the early diamond target stocks. Evidently your father shared that opinion.
Doc44, how did you determine that this was a later 29-2? Barrel marking? Or are they small diamond, pre-61 Coke bottle stocks, improbable on an early 29-2?
OP, I hope you enjoy this wonderful gift from your dad.

The roll marking on the barrel (the upright or modern style of ampersand in particular) indicates the revolver was made and shipped in early 1973 or later.

The serial number is in the 300,000 range which I believe puts it around '75 or '76.

Grips and case
Would it be possible for you to post a picture of you maple case? Your fathers gun could have been shipped with a presentation case from the factory. S&W used Mahogany for their cases with four different types of liners. All of these liners had problems withstanding the test of time. I refurbish these cases and liners.
A forum member, DW Fan, can restore your grips. He does excellent work!

My case has the normal storage area located on the bottom right side and has been stripped of all the covering material. I may get it redone after I solve getting the stocks restored. Thanks for the lead.
