s&W Model number
Recently inherited a pistol in very good shape. There is no model behind the yoke the serial number is 8269XX. The box says Military-38-Police blue 5 inch Square butt. Believe it is a 5 screw (can see 4 fifth under grip) it is 6 shot hand eject, blade front fixed groove in rear sight, wood grips small silver medallion. Any help appreciated.

You have what the box says; a Military/Police .38 Special Revolver. It is pre-WWII, and pre model numbers. Great gun, by the way.

As Mike stated, it is a prewar .38 Military & Police revolver, unless there is an S in front of the serial number you posted. In that case, it would date from 1946, shortly after the war.

Welcome to the forum Pop.
If there is no letter prior to the serial number on the butt it will date to around 1941. Can you post some pictures of the gun and box?

Believe it does have an S far left of serial. Got a couple of pictures but still figuring how to post them on the forum. Appreciate the responses. Will post photos shortly (hope)

If there is an S, yours shipped in 1946, likely before May. I have one about 2000 later than yours and it was May 17, 1946.

Got it with a bag and cleaning brush. Box had a few pieces of tape. After finding out about it, guess I will hang on to it. Any idea on the value. Thanks to all for the info.

Depending on condition (more photos would help) the gun itself would probably go for around $500 or so if it were in a shop. With the box and tools, assuming it is the correct box, add $100-$200 or so, I would guess. Maybe more. Being the Military and Police model from the 1940s, most boxes probably ended up in the trash, and if they were saved probably got damaged over time and thrown away later.
