Checkered top straps....
Did any S&W revolver, other than "The .357 Magnum" (Model 27 and "pre"-27) ever come with a checkered top strap?

No. At least not as standard factory practice (custom work could have been ordered - whether it ever was is beyond the scope of my knowledge).

Just looking at how you phrased your question, I want to clarify my reply.
The checkered top strap actually came standard on three variations of the same revolver:
1) Prewar .357 Magnum (Registered and non-Registered);
2) Postwar .357 Magnum (S prefix, with the sliding hammer block, AKA "Pre-Model 27");
3) Model 27 (including all dash variants)

And the 627, 627-0 and I believe the 627-1, although I have never handled a -1.

I have a little 22 kit gun made in 1955 that has a top strap that has always impressed me as very detailed/fancy compared to later guns. It is not checkered, but probably the next thing to it.

What is the big deal about some checking on the top of a rear sight
and barrel rib? Have any of you ever had an Armand Swenson
45 ACP. from back in the 70s. I still have one I carry. This artisan would check your finger if you could send it to him. Much to do about nothing. From the cave of a grumpy old guy. Best, Mike

I know of at least one 44 Special with that checkering on top strap and barrel rib, of course it started life as a Registered Magnum...

What is the big deal about some checkering?
It shows a bit of extra attention to detail; defines a notch up on the quality scale; and it’s purty. Ed
