just registered. Thanks for the great resource!

I have been trying to research the year of manufacture for my 2-1/2" stainless model 66-1. I have photos but don't see where to upload. (sorry, my 1st posting...).Serial number is X---X and also has A20 stamped above serial number but doesn't look like a factory marking. Thanks in advance for your knowledge!

I think you may be mistaken about your serial number, if I'm reading your post right. The serial number is the one stamped on the bottom of the grip frame. If you post that number we can tell you roughly when it was made. I believe what you posted are assembly marks, with no tie to when it was made. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

Thanks. The wood handle enclosed the serial number, right where you said it would be! Thanks

thanks all. The knowledge base out there is amazing! I bought this fine piece in 1999 for $200. Will be handed down to my sons. Now I'm looking for a 4"

THIEF !!! You really got that revolver for a great price! Welcome to the forum and know that you have a lucky son waiting for the Model 686 !

In 1999 that was a very good price... now it would indeed be outright highway robbery. If you look for a 4" Model 66-1 (my personal favorite variant) you can expect to pay at least twice and more likely three times as much now as you did then... but of course your 2 1/2" example you have now would probably be more like three to four times what you paid then, if not more. Your son will have one or two of the finest carry/duty revolvers S&W ever made.
