Default Trying to help a friend with his 19-4

I was at work showing a friend the new 19 I won at auction and he said he had one his dad gave him. I asked about it but he isn't a Smith nut so he didn't know too many answers. So I told him to go get it. He brought back a nice condition PR 19-4 with cutout grips.

He said he didn't known better and cleaned the gun with a lot of Hoppes9 and then WD40. The only marks I could see were these. Any advice on removing them or if it's residue or damaged bluing?

I agree with Pete...but "gently" use the polish.

I wouldn't sweat the crud in the flutes. That's a common place for it to accumulate, especially if shooting cast bullets. I can be tough to remove and will just re-accumulate when you shoot again.

Since its blued, I'd wipe down with Hoppes or similar cleaner and not worry about it, just enjoy (shoot) it.

If you have a can of Neverdull lying around it should take it off. Flitz on a piece of old t-shirt would also be good.

As good as it is, Don't use Mothers Mag polish on a blued finish. It can damage the finish. Filtz polish is much safer for blued guns. Remember to use a VERY LITE hand when using it.

It looks like a little bit of lead build up. No big deal.

If he needs to get rid of it using anything with an abrasive will get rid of the build up but can also damage the finish.
