Default Highway Patrolman

I've inherited an S&W .357 Highway Patrolman in very good condition. It's gonna sit in my gun safe with the others but I'm curious as to any information I can get on the revolver. No box and doesn't have original grips. Serial # is S 1156XX. It has an additional number on the yoke of 3055 0. It has a cheezy looking grip that has an Eagle & "Franzite" on the small medallion.

Any info on the gun or grips would be appreciated.

Thumbs up

Hi and Welcome.

You have a nice early one probably dating to early 1955.
It would be what collectors would call a 5 screw one.

If you scroll down a bit there is a thread ultimate highway patrolman that you may find of interest.

It probably shipped wearing a set of diamond magna grips.Franzites,if I remember correctly, were around in the 50s and 60s as an after market item.Every now and then, you'll see some that were made from wood

Hello Lee, great looking 4" HP. Plus a 5 screw and early.
Please treat yourself and go shoot it. It is the S&W workhorse.
Great relative who left it to you care for. Best.

Definitely go shoot it. Those N Frame .357's are a pleasure. And really, they were never meant to be safe queens.

Thanks, I'm retired law enforcement and have several revolvers, three of which were duty guns that I bought when the dept upgraded to something new. This one will have a few round put through it soon. Thinking I would like to find a set of correct grips for it.

Diamond Magnas would be appropriate for your gun. Just working from memory it looks like yours is a first year gun, made in 1954. Very cool, and it looks to be in good shape.

Oh, and Welcome to the Forum!

Nice gun to come by! Wish I had a 4". Do have a 6" from 1960. Have a beautiful set of diamond targets for it. Set on it now are Herrett. "Wood is Good"! Bob

Talking

The Highway Patrolman is the same exact revolver as the Model 27 except for the Matt blue and lack of checkered steel back strap. S&W dropped those features to reduce the price for Law Enforcement officers and Police departments.

Here's my 4 inch 28-2 with S serial number and a set of John Culina custom Maple grips.

Beautiful gun! Definitely go shoot it. It is not a princess like the 27's. Go have fun with it.

My 28 No dash has worn different stock sets. (1960) I am partial to this gun because it was my 1st online purchase. Really enjoy shooting it. Latest 2 stock sets. Have diamond targets & diamond magnas for it also. Bob
