Hey everyone,
I have just picked up a new(old) revolver from my LGS and have been trying to figure out when it was manufactured. I have a SW Model 60 with no dash after it. the Serial on the butt of the gun is R104***. The closest I could find is it was made after 1969, and I could be totally wrong of course. I would really appreciate any help in trying to figure it out. If it matters it does have a pinned barrel, and the original wood grips. Thanks all.

Its an early 1970s gun. Call the factory, they used to give ship date on these relatively new guns. Its not worth paying the big bucks for a factory letter. Virtually all of them went to distributors.

Welcome! These were highly popular guns at the time and sold quickly after being produced, and it likely shipped in early 1974. Enjoy!

Thanks for the help. I paid $250 for it so I think I got a good deal.

Lol of all places I got it at Cabelas. Aside from being dirty it's in great cosmetic and mechanical condition with a very smooth double action pull. It does have a shaved hammer but I think I like it this way. I was going to order a replacement just to have it.

First off Welcome. The Model 60 is a sidearm that won't disappoint.
It's impossible to tell the date of manufacture, however you can tell the ship date and in what configuration your gun left the factory. In order to tell one would need to know the entire serial number. Obtaining a history letter is a personal choice.

COOL! I was really hoping you weren't going to tell us a story about swindling some poor old widder woman out of it. ;)

Cabelas ought to know what it's worth though, so if they sold it to you for that, then good for you! You must be buddies with someone, or living right, or just had fortune smile on you, because even with the shaved hammer, as long as it still fires reliably, $250 is a steal for that little revolver.

I paid $425 for mine 3 years ago and prices have continued to go up since then.

Haha ya. The cabelas around me has a lot used guns. So many they say they are no longer taking in any at the moment until they can liquidate what they have. For me that's a win. I also picked up a all matching P.38 from them for about $600. I've been looking for a J-Frame Smith for awhile so I have something to carry when I want to wear a T-shirt and shorts. I found this at a steal oif a price and couldn't pass it up.
