Just can't help myself when it comes to tinkering with accessories. Ran across this muzzle brake for my Model 14-2 and couldn't refuse the option. I've used MB's on Model 41's and Hi Standard 22's and like the results but never on a 38 cal. I haven't had opportunity to shoot the M14 with MB yet. Would very much appreciate opinions/thoughts.
Thanks,
Ray

Well, as best memory serves from long, long ago, the brake had no discernible effect on my K-38 (other than to surrender its finish to the muzzle blast)------seems like the one on my Model 41 worked about the same, so I got a new one for the 38 (just for show), a new one for the Model 41 (also for show), and didn't use the one for the .45. I've heard tell they made some for the K-32, but have never seen one.

So---down to business: I have one for a K-38. It's been used, which is to say the surface facing the muzzle is sans finish (shiny black anodizing) for about half its surface (which is now shiny aluminum colored aluminum). The first PM saying "I want it" or some equally foolish phrase will find it in his mail box----assuming he had the good sense to tell me where the mail box is.

As an aside, it fits nicely on wide rib K-38's of the '50's, and not so nicely on later versions---at least the later versions I have. I've been told it will fit on the later versions if I "spring it some". I have successfully resisted the temptation to try that sort of Bubba-trick----not my style.

Ralph summed it up perfectly; they're ineffective, can damage the finish of the gun and the annodizing doesn't hold up well to use. Other than that, they pretty cool! I've owned a few and still have one in my collection.

These S&W marked brakes are still available from Numrich (GPC) for about $35.

They probably made it for NRA bullseye matches. Would have been cool to see someone shooting one with the lead 148 HBWC on a humid day, with the smoke rising up.
Yours is too nice to shoot.

Where they made by S&W or an aftermarket company?

Numrich site shows S&W as manufacturer but states in description as being stamped S&W. As mentioned in other post/comments on this thread, the brake is lightweight (Alloy or Aluminum?) and almost certainly the black surface would be gone fairly quick after firing. I've got another Model 14 that is definitely a shooter grade I'm going to test it on.

They're better than the old High Standard muzzle brakes where the set screws tighten up and dig in the barrel. I used to have a model 102 space gun with a MB.

Your 14 looks super nice from the pictures! I myself would not chance damaging the finish. I have a 14-3. They shoot so well as is. Bob

Bob...Nice 14-3!
In total agreement with you about messing up finish by using muzzle brake. I lubricated surfaces real well and loosely installed the brake just to see what it looked like and took a picture to post on Forum. I'll be putting it on a finish challenged M14 and shooting it just so I will know for myself what others have mentioned in this post as to being ineffective.
Inquiring minds need to know???

Here's one on a K38 Masterpiece I once owned.... supposed to tame the hellashisley powerful 38 Special round... :)

Them wadcutters really give ya a thump when ya shoot 'em.:D

I once shot a 38 in an International match where Men's Centerfire Pistol was being shot concurrently with Women's Sport Pistol (22 only).
The young woman shooting next to me complained to the range officials about the distraction caused by the "blast" of my wadcutter load (classic 2.7 gr Bullseye!). I was actually bumped off the firing line and reassigned to later relay!

I was partly amused and partly ticked off!

If I thought that one of these K-38 muzzle brakes would increase the muzzle blast, I'd be sorely tempted to get one and use it again under similar circumstances!

very curious but Xs 2 on the ugly.

that said, if i ever see one handy, i will probably buy it. CURIOUS

krs/kenny :)
