Folks,

I inherited a S&W Model 14 from my dad as he passed a few days ago. I would just like to know more about it. Year it was made, anything special about it.

K456926 is probably a 1961 revolver. That is near the end of the original Model 14 production. The Model 14-1 came out shortly thereafter. I have a -1 in my collection that shipped in April, 1962. The serial number is in the K470xxx range.

Any other comments we might have will probably stem from seeing pictures. Pretty hard to comment on much when all we know is the model and serial number. ;)

By the way, in case you don't already know this . . .

The Model 14 was called the K-38 Masterpiece, both before and after it became the Model 14 in 1958. Production lasted from 1947 until 1982.

I suspect the OPs gun is a 14-1. My 14-1, serial K4319xx, shipped on June 28, 1961. We all know that S&W did not ship guns in serial number order, but I would be a bit surprised to find one with a newer serial number and an older change number.

Charlie31, if you open the cylinder and take a look at what is stamped on the yoke (in front of the cylinder), you should see "MOD 14-1" if my thinking is correct. Pictures of your gun would be nice.

I am sorry for your loss. Lost my Dad 5 years ago. I still miss him.

Pics.of it

I found where it does say 14-1. Its been a rough week. Dad has had this for a long time. He also gave me a Steven's Crack Shot .22LR he got when he was 14. Neat little rifle.

Welcome Charlie (my first name as well.) My dad passed a K-38 Masterpiece back to me about a year before his passing. It had an interesting story behind it in that I got it as part of a trade way back in the seventies when I was collecting High Standards. In his wisdom he knew I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, so he swapped me a Ruger Standard Model for it and put it away. The Ruger is long gone of course, but the Smith has great significance, not just for its intrinsic value but for the memories of Dad attached to it. Think not about the loss of your father, but of the great memories he left for you.

Regards,
Charlie the Frog

Pick up a BK Grip adapter and enjoy your Dad's Model 14. Good memories there.
