I have a 686 no dash model with the 4 position front sight. I was just doing a quick search and found mostly 8 3/8" barrels. Mine is a 6" barrel. Were the 6" models less common? Curious about it. Seems to be a good shooter. Any special value for these models?

I believe those sights were originally designed by Ron Power for Smith & Wesson. They are identical in function to the rear sight Power designed for Wichita Arms on their Unlimited pistols. They are ok if you only shoot one load, and a pain in the rear to sight in.

Aside from a possible decline in silhouette shooting, there is a reason why those variants went out of production fairly quickly. They look cool enough but like the above poster mentioned, they are not for the casual plinker. I lusted after one for a while but I'm over that now.

But they ARE cool...

I looked at one at a LGS yesterday. Locks up tight, but absolutely filthy. They have it marked at $749 plus tax and will not budge on the price. I resisted, but its pulling at me.

I have the Model 29-3 silhouette gun and carry it deer hunting.

If it's any help to you in making up your mind, I bought a 6" 586 Silhouette Model from a member here last December for $950.

A filthy gun can be cleaned up easily. At $749 I would buy that one in a heartbeat.

In the late eighties and early nineties my shooting partner and I liked to shoot in two casual leagues on alternating weeks. We both shot Bullseye with customized High Standards one week, then PPC with S&W revolvers the next. I shot a full house Fred Schmidt “Short Cylinder” gun based on a Model 14 and Martin shot one of those six inch 686s with the quick-adjust sights. He always did well with it at that game, but he never shot it at silhouettes. I kinda wish I’d bought it from him when we “retired” from that game, but “You can’t have it all. If you did, where would you put it?”

My 6” 686-4 which I bought mid 90’s has the four position sight. I use #2 for 25 meters and # 4 at 50. #’s 1 and 3 are for an alternate load I still have a couple of hundred rounds loaded for.

TBH I don’t think there is enough difference in POI between 50 and 25m if sighted in for the longer distance to worry about it.

So there are plenty of 6" models with this sight. I've had the gun for years but have not shot it very much. Unfortunately I moved this year to an area that is short on decent ranges and nothing close to a real Silhouette range like I had in Midland (TX). I'll probably still pull it out of the safe some to shoot at close range in the back yard.

Thanks for the replies.
