I would like to know the fabrication year of what looks like to be a model 17.

If the full serial number on the bottom of the grip frame is K812770, likely 1968. If there is no number in front of the K it can't have more than six digits following it.

If K81277, 1949.

K 8127, 1947.

K 812 or less, 1946.

If no matching numbers on the butt, cylinder, yoke, and under the barrel, those are assembly numbers, and 1968 is a good year, at least from a number search in my 4th Edition.

It might be early 1969. K8075xx shipped Dec 1968. It was a Model 17-3.

Most likely assembled in 1970. It could have shipped the next year (potentially even later, but probably not, since the K-22 was a popular model).

Hey Guys. My father recently passed away and I knew pretty much every gun that he once owned, but it turns out he had purchased quite a few in the last 10-15 years. There is only one that I ma having problems with knowing exactly what it is. From everything I can see it appears to be a model 17, but maybe you guys can shed some light on it? Serial Number is K59065.

Welcome to the S&W Forum. In the future, I suggest you start a new thread when you want to ask about a different gun. We try to keep the discussion about each particular item in a discreet thread.

It is a K-22 Masterpiece, assuming the barrel is 6" long. It probably left the factory late in the year 1948, possibly early 1949. They were not shipped in serial order.

The Model 17 didn't appear until 1958. In June, 1957, S&W assigned model numbers to each of its handguns. Prior to that, they had model names, not model numbers.

If you like to shoot, this revolver may well become a favorite. I've owned many K-22s over the years. All of them shot well.

But K-22 K59635 shipped in December, 1948, and K-22 K59365 also shipped in December, 1948. As I mentioned before, S&W did not ship guns in serial order. We do know that K-22s in the K59000 range were available for shipment at the end of 1948.

It takes a letter to be certain about the shipment of any S&W revolver.

You guys have been most helpful! This will make settling his estate much easier! I wish I could hang onto this gun, but I moved to Australia many years ago and gun ownership here is MUCH more tightly regulated. If I chose to import this gun, I would be required to competitively shoot it I believe 4 times per year, just to be allowed to own it!
