Found a nice 19-3
I’ve been shooting S&W revolvers for a good number of years now but have just recently gotten into the classics. Found a really nice 19-3 a few days ago and thought I’d share.
It’s a got a 2.5” barrel, a round butt, nickel finish and adjustable sights. It is wearing checkered panel style stocks with medallions and no diamonds. I believe they are original but they do have one, maybe two, names etched into the inside of them. Not sure if this is from factory or previous owner. It also has a trigger stop that protrudes through a window cut in the back of the trigger guard. I believe this is standard but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed this feature before.
The serial number is 12K406x but the best I could get out of my 4th edition standard catalog dates it somewhere between 1968 and 1977. The finish is not perfect but still very good however the action felt very rough. This was corrected however by taking it apart and cleaning out a sticky residue which appeared to be from an over abundance of gun oil that accumulated. The trigger is pretty good now but nowhere as nice as my 29-2. Maybe I’m just not used to K frames , who knows.
I am really happy to have found a nice example of a model 19 as I have read much about them without ever seeing one. Looking forward to getting it out on the range to see how she shoots. I am familiar with the Bill Jordan heritage of this particular model (from this forum) but if anyone has anything else they’d like to share about it I’d love to hear it.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Stay safe out there.
P.S. - pics to follow

That is a beautiful example of a P&R Model 19...The trigger stop can be beneficial to target shooters who want zero overtravel in their trigger, but it can also cause malfunctions in everyday carry...If this is to be your EDC, you can remove the trigger stop completely, but if you do, save the parts for reinstallation if you decide to sell or trade later... ...Ben

Nice gun. My 19-3 is a 2k serial, and it dates to 1972. I'd guess your 12k is late 1977.

Thanks for the info. It seems to be set perfectly. Do you know what other models have a trigger stop like this? Im surprised I have never noticed them before. It seems like a better design then my newer PC revolvers with the post attached to the trigger which often scratches the back of the guard.

My early 60s model 14-1 also has one.
None of my other smiths from the 20s through about 1980 have one. I think they tended to be on adjustable sight K-frames in the middle 20th century.

Beautiful! I have its brother (1973) in blued, no trigger stop, very nice action. I have a 66 no dash with a beautiful trigger I'm thinking of carrying. It has the trigger stop, but I'd rather not remove it. Odd configuration with a smooth combat trigger; they're usually on revolvers with the 3T's, from what I've seen.
Congrats on a nice pickup.

I THINK the trigger stops started showing up on target sighted K frames in the 1960s. IIRC, in the 1970s, S&W sent out a flyer stating that the stops could "creep" and block the trigger from coming fully back, rendering them unable to fire and recommended that the stops be removed from law enforcement revolvers.

Everyone should have a 19 snubbie. I bought mine from a member here about 7 years ago. I think it's -3 but I would have to look. I paid about $750 for it which was top dollar back then. When you look at the deep blue finish, recessed cyl and pinned barrel they can grow on a person, especially if you spend some time shooting one. They shouldn't be as accurate as they are with that short of barrel but it always amazes me every time I shoot mine.

This is my first revolver with panel style grips and although I think they look the part they just don’t fit my hand well at all. So last night I swapped out a set of Hogue bantams from my 296 and man they felt just right! However I’d like to keep this revolver as close to stock as possible so I’m thinking perhaps a set of Tyler Ts or BKs might be the ticket? It seems the bantams mimic the profile of this combination but I’m not sure if they work well with round butts. Any advice say ye?
