What gun sock do you guys recommend for long term storage of blued revolvers?

I have had good luck with BoreStores.

Couldn't find those recently so picked up a similar model from Midway. But the Midway ones will only store newer autos.

I’m not having a lot of luck finding borestores either.

What size will fit 4” revolvers best?

Years ago Gander Mountain had a clearance sale on their silicone treated pistol socks, so I stocked up. Gander Mtn as we knew it then is long gone, but I still have a few of those socks in their original bags. For their specific job they work great for me.

Another plus for Bore Stores. I have them on all my handguns and rifles. I bought them a dozen at a time years ago when they were easier to find and cheaper in price.

Mrs. Jeppo makes them to order for me. We use tired 100% cotton towels.

I just use zerust or similar VCI treated zip lock bags. But they aren't padded like a sock. They make handgun and rifle sizes.

Wipe them down with a lightly oiled soft cloth and store on shelves in gun safe. If you don't shoot them, wipe them down annually - about a five second job per gun.

Years ago I knew a very serious SAA collector. Serious is probably and understatement. He stored all of his precious guns in off-the=shelf white cotton athletic socks. I have used these for quite a while but only been short term storage. Anyone else do this? Any long term cautions?

I keep mine, as well, in clean old white sox!

Go to Walmart. Buy a bag of men's socks. Store you handguns in these.......Been doing it for 20 years. Works as good or better than that high $$ gimmicky stuff you can buy.

I had a very good friend who used the cotton white socks to store perhaps a hundred or more handguns, many of which were valuable Colt SAs and 1911s. I'm pretty sure most of these guns were never fired after he bought them but maybe inspected occasionally. He stacked them in gun safes. I don't know if he wiped them down with an oily cloth before putting them in a sock.

Some can really obsess over proper storage, but simple usually works. I've never seen a need for the socks unless for protection against scratching or marring a finish if you stack them.

Bore Stores, is not accepting new orders at this time. It is a small family run operation. They have been overwhelmed with orders and are doing the best they can to catch up. They should be accepting new orders when current
orders are fulfilled. These are good honest Americans and are doing the best they can. Please be patient.

I placed a one item order with them a few months ago. Two months passed. No response to emails. I got a refund from my credit card company.
One thing to get bogged down.
Another not to answer emails.-That only takes a few seconds.

I use these for all of my handguns and long guns....

Not good that way when you stack "em" 3 deep.......Socks work better after you wipe "em" down.

Yes, already addended that in post #14. No coverings needed if single-layered on a shelf.

They are famous for that. I started a thread on their incredibly horrible customer ( lack of ) service. They don't even answer an email when your order does not come. Same as you, my CC company just did a chargeback.

They are has beens.

Plenty of cheaper and better alternatives, Sack UPs is one. You'll have them in two days without the begging and non answers. LOTS of options these days!

Bore Stores can keep it. They give No courtesy. Vote with your wallet.

I have never cared for cotton sock storage, as cotton absorbs moisture. I oil mine, then most are placed flat on a safe shelf, covered with a thick, oil impregnated poly fleece sheet, then another oiled layer of guns..... Best way to maximize storage space (I need another safe). My most used handguns are on racks on a couple other shelfs. Works for me.

I'm a big fan of Bore Stores and have used them for years. Aside from being a small family business, I also understand that Covid hit them pretty hard. Be patient, I'm sure they'll be back.

Before COVID, which is what? 3 years old now. That excuse is all worn out too.

Here you go. Over a year ago- same song and dance. Just be patient though. "They'll be back".

BORE STORES- No customer service!

Same thing happened to me. Have been using bore-stores for years. Began buying them at gun shows from the owners of the company many years ago. Ordered a lot from them 3-4 months ago. They took my money from credit card but never received any product. Sent two e-mails with no response so I contacted credit card company and they refunded my money. I'm DONE with them.

When I couldn't find small ones I took rifle Sack-ups and cut them to use for handguns. I tie them on the ends with rubber bands of ties like you find on various grocery products.

I ordered four dozen Bore Stores in 2019.

Their service was very accommodating as I asked for a discount because of quantity. I was given a nice discount and they shipped right away.

I haven't revisited their site as I have myself a nice inventory of them.

For the last 30 years or so, every beat up old S&W target gun that's come to live here has been treated to "Ralph's Bath".

The gun comes ALL apart (except for barrels and action studs). Every thing goes to soak in Mineral Spirits for 2-3 days---longer if I have other fish to fry. Then all the bits, pieces, nooks, crannies, and screw holes get scrubbed to within an inch of their life----and rinsed with clean Mineral Spirits---and dried with DRY high pressure air (100-125 PSI).

Then they get hosed down with CorrosionX, and left to soak for 2-3 days---or however long it takes me to get back to it. As much of the CorrosionX as will come off gets blasted off with DRY high pressure air------and everything gets put back together.

The remaining CorrosionX on the exterior get wiped off with Hoppes #9 on a clean cotton cloth. The gun gets dried/polished with another clean cotton cloth, and goes to live with its friends in a large display case.

The case is not air tight, so the guns get the dust vacuumed off of them about twice a year.

That's it---there ain't no more! A whole bunch of guns have been sitting in that display case for upwards of 30 years, and have come to no harm whatsoever.

Now let's talk about fishing tackle. Most folks will tell you fishing tackle is made to catch fish. The fact of the matter is fishing tackle is made to sell to fisherman. So too is any/all super-whiz-bang gun storage stuff made to sell to paranoid gun owners----except for CorrosionX. It's GOOD STUFF!!

Bore Stores would be the top of the line if you can find them, they are expensive though. Have some of them but of late go to Wally World and buy their silicone impregnated rifle socks and cut them to size for need with handgun and sew one end shut. My routine is to clean gun and wipe down with silicone sprayed cloth and put in sock. Works well for me, though I regularly am fondling my firearms and wipe them down again when done.

bout everything absorbs moisture.......Sounds like you may end up with an oily mess on the first/second layer. Especially on the grips. Your way you have remove the TOTAL top layers iffen you want one that is on the bottom...........Cotton socks work great!

A dry rod in my safe keeps humidity non existent, and you really can go with nothing. "The Ralph Tremaine Method" sound like a plan!

There are Chinese made Bore Stores that you can actually get to your door in 2 days if you have prime.

I use Browning VCI Pistol Sock. Usually someone on ebay or amazon is selling them. I just search for the cheapest price. They also make one for rifles.

Like many of you, I had used Bore Stores for years. Great product. Last order was placed in May and I never got my socks. Called and emailed several times. Nothing. Finally went back to my CC company and they told me I had waited too long to request a credit so I was SOL. I get the whole small, family run business thing. But I can simply not deal with people taking my money, not shipping me my product and than ignoring me. If they ever do come back, I will not be a customer.

First off Ralph, can I send ALL my guns your way for a spa treatment?😀🤔 And secondly, I would love to see some pictures of your large display case!

Not an ideal storage compromise, but no "oily mess". I just spray each sheet of material with a coating of "Barricade" before use. Trying to store about 100 handguns in limited space. The couple dozen regular use guns are easily accessible on racks.

Under good storage conditions, almost any method will work, but I have seen handguns stored in damp conditions in cotton socks and gun cases that have quietly rusted... YRMV.

I have used old socks with holes in them for gun socks for the past 50 years. Works just fine. Most of this modern stuff for sale is needlessly complicated.

I use silicone gun socks from Midway. They have them on sale from time to time and they work fine.

What do you like about sackups, specifically for long guns?

My handguns go in cardboard boxes with rust preventative paper. Protectagun sells boxes for most handguns sizes and shapes. Keeps them nicely organized for me.

Wrap in VCI paper and seal up in a VCI bag.

That's how I package pieces for shipping and how I store my own stuff.

You wanna ensure complete protection from rust & corrosion? You need to isolate the steel from environmental oxygen. That's what the VCI products are for. No piece of fabric, old rags or socks can prevent oxygen reaching the steel.

NONE! For long term storage I’d recommend Rig Universal Grease inside and out , leave grips off. Then wrap gun in waxed paper and then in aluminum foil. Will stay in perfect condition for decades.

Gun socks are not for long term storage IMHO.

Pharman on this site sells S&W logo'd VCI paper. I've bought some to replace wrinkled up, torn or missing sheets in my blue boxes.
