I would say $700-$750 in the Ohio/Kentucky area, where Smiths typically go for maximum value.

Saw one in a local pawn shop a couple of months back with significant wear but mechanically fine with wooden round butt stocks for $599 +9% tax. It was gone in a few days.

In my longtime quest to locate a nice, preferably older, Centennial I was able to win an auction on GB for a very fine model marked 40. It dates to December of 1966 as per Roy.
And, as luck would have it, shortly thereafter I won another auction, this one for a Centennial (“pre” Model 40) that Roy dates to December of 1953!
Both guns are in fantastic condition and each ran me around $750. Pretty much the average going auction price on GB, but a lot less than the prices I’m seeing on other internet gun sites.

Those are some very nice examples of a model 40. I've been looking for a nice one for a few years to round out my j-frame collection. Alas, I've never seen one live yet.

I've long wanted one of these for ages - if I could find one for around $700+- I'd jump on it, but even plain 36s have gotten uncommon around me.

I picked up this Centennial about a year ago, stopped in at a Cabelas and there it was. About 95% condition I would say but unfortunately no box. It does still have the pin under the grip for locking the grip safety. Please ignore the oil streaks.

There is a decent 1968 or so Model 40 at a shop here in Charlotte. Good condition but maybe not 96%. Price started with a "6". Just bought one yesterday or it would have come home with me this morning. A SWCA member owns the shop.

I picked up a pre-40 at a local auction several years ago. It was a bit dull, but cleaned up quite well (light Flitz and RenWax). Hammer price was $500., but gotta add in the buyer premium and taxes, so it was really over $600. An estimate today in my location would be around $750. or so. The price on these has jumped considerably since the Covid 19 price hike on most things nice.
Shipping date is estimated to be around early 1955.

Ok I know this is old post but. LOL
I have 2 of the original M40s. Both with box and one with all the paperwork along with the test shell. Fired 2 time that we can tell. It has the card you fill out to mail in in the box with it. Both have the paper they wrap them in. Try to figure what to ask for them or do I even need to think about sale. Problem is the kids have no care for them so thinking of letting them go to someone that likes them.
