In early 1976, Hiram's Gun Shop in El Cajon, California sent a 22 Jet Model 53 to S&W to be engraved for Elvis Presley with a Bicentennial theme. Russ Smith did the engraving and inlays.

Enjoy!

For many years, this gun has been part of the Gary Garbrecht collection.
The gun has two cylinders in 22 Jet and 22 L.R. It is cased in a walnut case lined with suede.

Hiram's was smart enough to be sure they got some advertising from the gun!

Russ's signature:

Oddly, he also signed it under the grips. My GUESS is that he signed it under the grips first, and was later given permission to do the visible signature.

Both cylinders and the barrel are numbered to get them back together after bluing. Pics are in the album linked above if you want to see them.

There is an unusually large amount of provenance with this gun! Gary and Russ became good friends and visited with each other. They talked a lot by phone and in writing.
Let's start with the serial number:

A letter from Russ stating he did it:

Russ gave Gary a glossy 8 x 10 of himself:

Russ typed up a summary of his career for Gary:

Russ gave Gary the original drawing he made for this project:

Here is a note from Russ to Gary given with the original Job Card for this project. Both sides of the Job Card are shown:

These photos were taken by Russ himself in 1976 and some are dated on the back. Thanks to Mike Kennelly for selling these to me. Mike acquired them directly from Russ while writing his book on engraving.

The large pic at top center has this photo of Russ actually engraving this gun taped to the back:

The backs of the small pics are dated:

This is a GREAT piece of provenance. It is an internal S&W employee Newsletter that mentions and pictures this gun in an article about Factory engraving. Gary had many Zerox copies of it, but his heirs did not locate the original. THANKS to my friend Don Mundell for giving me an original!

The next three pics are from the Newsletter:

This is an original auction catalog for an Oct, 1988 Julia auction that sold this gun. This is Russ Smith's copy of the catalog and is addressed to him. Again, Gary had Zerox copies, but I did not get an original from the family. Thanks again to Mike Kennelly for selling it to me with the pics that Russ took.

The engraving are fantastic, This will definitely sell for a fortune.
Thanks for sharing.

Extremely nice example of the skill of the S&W factory engravers! I'm not a fan of the barrel length or the caliber, but I am an Elvis fan and that's a really nice revolver.

I am a little confused though-
Handejector says that "In early 1976, Elvis had Hiram's Gun Shop in El Cajon, California order an engraved 22 Jet Model 53 with a Bicentennial theme." However, in the original paperwork shown below R.J. Smith states that it's a "Bi-centennial commemorative gift for Elvis Presley". So, did Elvis order the revolver as a gift for someone (or himself), or did Hiram's order it as a gift for Elvis? Or do we know?
Too bad Elvis didn't have his name or initials engraved on that Model 53 somewhere! That would make it even more priceless...if that's possible!

I was a good friend of Gary Garbrecht and handled this engraved revolver during one of my visits to his home in the late 1990s. It is one of RJS's best works and even more unique with the connection to Elvis. Gary's wife is a fan of Elvis and he bought the gun for her.

Back in the day, I lived in El Cajon, and was a frequent visitor to Hirams. I had made friends with one of the brothers who owned the liquor store/ gun shop. His name was Blaine Hutchenson. The family had interests in a Royal Hotel and Picnic and Chicken. I don't remember the gun, perhaps it was before the brothers bought the place.
I think it was 1969 when Elvis came to San Diego and sold out the Sports Arena. I had bought 10 tickets to the show and I had connections with a lady in the office, and she got my tickets to the first row right on the stage. My wife and I were huge Elvis fans. Big Larry

Is the extra cylinder stabilized/secured in the case in some manner?
No, there is nothing to secure the cylinder.

I think that is just poor wording in Russ's letter. I do not think Hiram's was giving it to Elvis. Elvis owned a lot of engraved guns. He is also known to have given several engraved guns away. He had a Mod 29 lavishly engraved especially for Lamar Fike with the initials LF inlaid in gold. So, we really don't know if Elvis was doing it for himself or to give away.

Lee,

Really great gun that everyone enjoyed seeing at last year's symposium. As Bill stated, some of Russ's best inlay work! Another example of the extraordinary guns that show up at our annual meeting. Thanks for sharing on the forum.

That is SO COOL!! I would love to know why Elvis chose that caliber. The only that would make that package better would be if the grips were engraved by Alvin White. I think he is the one who does the spectacular engraved and inlaid grips. Of course, then again, it may be “too busy” then. But, I think I would chance it!

Wow what a absolutely stunning revolver there and such attention to detail. Thanks for sharing such a fine specimen with such a cool unique history Lee.
P.S. your photos are unreal as well.

I bet that will sell for a pretty penny, best auctioned than just a straight price tag sale.

Lee-I enjoyed seeing your gun at the NC Symposium. One of my buddies asked if I had seen the Elvis gun and pointed towards your table. You weren’t there but I walked over. The first gun I saw was the one in my photo. I thought this was the one I was supposed to see. Then I saw the REAL Elvis gun. Spectacular

With that serial number I would think it should be a Model 53-2, not a Model 53.
