My first post on the forum included a small thumbnail of this revolver, an S&W Model 28-2. I thought I would show it again and include some more detailed photos. I bought this piece from a local pawn and gun early in 2022. The S prefix serial number indicates 1962 manufacture. As you can see, it's in great shape. However, it did not come with box and papers and it was wearing a rather unattractive Pachmayr grip for N-Frame. I managed to find a S&W blue box; not for this model but period correct. On EBay I found an original owner's manual from 1967 and a set of Altamont classic panel grips for N-frame S&W. From all I have read in S&W catalog #3 this piece would have originally been wearing magna or target stocks. The grips I have are kind of like magna grips but they are made of Santos rosewood. I think the dark satin-finish goes great with the satin metal finish of the 28, but I admit they wouldn't be the correct type for this revolver. Anyway, I'm loving it just the way it is now and it will be a shooter; not a safe queen. Thanks for looking.

Even if not factory those are definitely Magna stocks, very nice Magna stocks! Targets would have been special order or replaced after delivery by owner.

Now what kind of period correct ammo will be fed to this beast? :)

I reload a bunch of .38 Special; mainly target loads using Missouri bullets 158 grain LSWC and 148 grain bevel base wadcutters. I also have a good supply of Hornady 148 grain HBWC. So this gun will shoot mainly .38's, but I am definitely willing to shoot some .357 Magnums in the big N-Frame. I have been avoiding magnum loads in my 65-5, but I figure this gun can take them in quantity with little or no problem.

PERIOD .357 ammo was loaded with soft lead semi wadcutter bullets.

In 1976 I bought a 3 1/2" M27-2 to convert to .44 Special. However, before I took it to the gunsmith, I bought a box of factory .357s & shot it at the range.

At the end of the 50 round session, you could not tell that the barrel was rifled! That soft lead ammo leaded terribly. Thank the Lord for hard cast and jacketed bullets!
