I have the opportunity to pick up a Model 27-2 with 3.5 inch barrel. It is it good shape, tight lock up, original bluing is probably 90-95%, I think original grips, and no box.

I know it's sort of a "grail gun" for some, but I just don't have an idea of it's true value. I appreciate any light anyone can shine on this.

If you check several auction sites, asking prices are all over the map for one as you describe from $1800-$3500 for that particular model with the short barrel, which some believe makes it more desirable than the longer barrel lengths. Just depends on how bad you want one and how much you are willing to pay. I believe, as with most vintage Smith revolvers in good shape, they will only continue to escalate in value. If it seems like a good deal for you, snatch it up while you can. Good luck.

A safe place to start is $1500 to $2000 for a 90 - 95% gun. If you can get it for less than $1500, you got a deal. Then there're those who find them "as new" at Bass Pro for $999, $920 after discounts. :D

What are the grips you put on it ?

I am not sure I would pay 1500 for a 90% gun, but I would for a 95% example. Maybe 13-1400 for 90%.

I bought a 98% a year+ ago for 1600 shipped. I see that condition for 2-2500.00 now. Not that i would pay that.

There is something about them. They just look ALL business:D. Whatever you pay, in a couple years, the price will be up from what you paid. They are one of the most sought after Smiths

I paid a touch under $1,900 for a 5” Model 27-2 98% with presentation case, tools & papers late last year.

And other Cabelas must be different from the Maine one. They just price guns stupidly high because they don’t have a clue what they have.

I picked up this used but tight mechanically 3.5” from a pawn shop about two years ago for $950 OTD with some rubber grips on it. It has some holster/blueing wear but nothing below the surface was wrong with it finish wise.

YMMV

Well here it is, P&R, T&T, Red insert front sight, no white outline rear. I believe these are the original grips. Excellent shape, tight lock up, buttery smooth action. No box.

I picked it up for $1,000.00.
