Default 41 Magnum perfect Mountain Gun

So as not to muddy up another thread that is running, I figured I would start a thread strictly on this gun.

This belongs to a friend, who is a member here and no doubt will add his comments when he sees this posted.

This is a Model 27-2.

It had some rough areas and was a good base gun for a rebuild. The cylinder ended up being replaced rather than doing a rebore. The barrel was rebored to .41 and barrel shank cut back according to RJM.

It is now a Pinned and Recessed .41 Magnum, skinny barrel "Mountain Gun", wearing the perfect (to my eye and hand) 5" barrel.

Both in packing and shooting I find the 5" N Frame to be absolutely ideal.

The reason it was sent out was for me to develop a commercial general purpose .41 Magnum load. Problem was that I did not actually own a .41 Magnum!

**** FULL DISCLOSURE**** I own a small ammo custom ammo company.

Anyways, RJM sent the gun out and I went to order brass. That ended up taking literally over a year from the time I ordered until I received as they were busy producing other cartridges.

Between lack of brass and me being busy trying to keep up with loading other ammo, the project was on a perpetual back burner. Finally I had a chance and was able to do some development and T&E. A "sweet spot" was found with a 215 grain hardcast SWC at 1210 FPS. Neither a top end, pushing the limits load, nor a cowboy action spitball type load.

Ended up being a very nice all around/general purpose load, and I have been having pun packing RJM's gun around lol.

The super cool old Pachmayr camo grips came off, and some Ropers were put on. Now she is looking pretty sharp!

The gun, though refinished, has just enough small rough spots that one does not mind packing it. I take care of it, as it is a loaner, but still it is not a safe queen and I would have zero issue taking it with me on a December elk hunt or a February Jackrabbit Safari in the deep snow!

It has a perfect balance. Simply a very cool piece.

A great looking revolver in one of my favorite handgun calibers! I think your friends .41 magnum would rank high on a list of "Perfect Packing Pistols" as coined by John Taffin.

Now that is one the "Mother Ship" needs to build and brand as the Tennessee Mountain Gun when they open the revolver line in my home state.

Beautiful project and result!

Very nice with the Ropers, but why is your photo captioned that it is a 27-2? The .41 Magnum was a Model 57. Or isn't that a photo of your friend's gun?

It’s a model 27-2 (357) converted to 41 Mag.

I really like that gun.

Many, maybe around 20 years ago I had a stainless .41 magnum Mountain gun. I loved it.
I had a very difficult time finding ammo, and I do not reload.
I had to trade it in for a 629 Mountain Gun which I still have and am very happy with.
41 Magnum is a great round, but you have to reload or be able to buy online, which we cannot do in NY anymore.

It is captioned 27-2 because the revolver is a 27-2 that was converted to a .41 Magnum.

RJM is the initials of the owner. He uses his initials on other forums. Here he is known as Superman!

.41 Magnums and .38 Supers.

Superman aka RJM aka Bob is pretty much the go to subject matter expert on those, and this Model 27 converted to .41 is Bob's. I have been using it for ammunition development and testing for my company.

You and Bob have developed a Perfect Packing Pistol. I have a buddy, Dave Workman, who would drool over that one. Dave knows the value of a fine handgun, and his favorite is the .41 mag.

This is a tastefully done custom firearm. Thank you for sharing.

Hard to believe that Smith & Wesson released the stainless 41 Magnum Mountain gun 25 years ago and the blued version 6 years later.

WOW time flies. I sure wish the blue Model 57 variation would have been released before the introduction of the lock

That is a beautiful 41 Magnum conversion that Bob owns. It sure looks better with the Ropers than those came Pachmayers

Though technically that is not a Mountain gun. The Mountain Revovlers and later the Mountain Guns were defined as 4" taper barrel revolvers on a round but frame. The firearms had black blade rear sights with a plain black ramp front sight. The cylinders had the black powder chamfer to them

Of course the Mountain Guns also say "Mountain Gun" on the barrel

All that being said, if Smith & Wesson offered up a 5" tapered barrel 41 Magnum I would be a buyer for it in Stainless or Blue, probably both if both were available.

I do love the 41 Magnum cartridge

I should have known that.....Bob was down my way a while back, he had lunch with my father and I at a little steakhouse in Moulton, TX.

Very nice and a neat project. As a fan of Smith and Wesson's 27's and their Mountain Guns and 41 Magnums I am envious. Nice job and thanks for showing to all.

Although that revolver is a "rebuild" or "conversion", IMO it's an outstanding revolver chambered for a stellar cartridge! And yes, I am a huge fan of the .41 mag. cartridge - have been since 1972.
I do reload for and cast the majority of the bullets required to feed my .41 mag. revolvers and rifle.
Thanks for sharing both the story and the photos! That is certainly one fine revolver!
