Greetings,

I have a 19-3 with the 4" barrel and what appears to be the original box. However, the revolver has a set of target stocks on installed and will not easily fit it the box. My question is whether the revolver could have been delivered with a set of smaller stocks (magna) and the target stocks added later?

Thanks.

Box labels include the type of grip the gun shipped with. S for Service stocks, T for Target stocks... Also, how many lugs are there in the metal corners of the box? If you post a pic of the box end with the label, someone will be able to tell you right away.

An original box for a 4" Model 19 will accommodate the gun with target stocks installed. All standard production Model 19s with 4 and 6-inch barrels would have shipped with target stocks. It is possible a 4 or 6-inch Model 19 could be ordered with magnas, but that would be a special order, non-standard, non-catalogued item.

We need to see the box. I run into a lot, by my estimation, ginned up boxes. However, you never know what S&W might do.

BTW, I'm an av8r too.

Mystery solved...

Thanks to all responders. The box label does indeed have the stock marked as 'T' and has the correct serial number. 5 metal staples at each corner. I guess I thought there would be a roomier fit as the revolver 'just' fits in the box and I can see where the front sight, hammer and rear sight have scratched the inside of the box.

Thanks again to all.

BTW, when I put this on the market, does having a numbered matching box make any value difference?

To most collector types, having the original box numbered to the gun definitely adds value to the package. All the other stuff does too, if you have it; i.e. manual/parts list, tool kit (rod, brush, swab, SAT aka screwdriver), NOX paper, and advertising papers for ammo, holsters, etc.

Here is my Model 19-3 in its original box. The end label has a T in the Stocks section and the box has five lug staples.

We'd love to see your M19-3, a wonderful revolver to have. I have one, too, with the original box, but alas, no accessories. Does yours also have a target hammer and trigger?
