Default 1974 Model 42, Let's See the 40s and 42s

Bought this 1974 Model 42 from a retired Kentucky State Trooper 10+ years ago. He acquired it (legally) from seized / evidence guns. Wish that I knew the history. Carrying it this evening.

Anyone else carry a 40 or 42?

Yea, got two. A steel and an alloy. The greatest little pocket gun out there.

Ryan,
That is a exceptionally clean looking 42 considering it had been evidence

For the brief time that the Model 40 was re-introduced at the dash 1 engineering revision there were a few small batches of unique looking variations.

I grabbed this guy back then

The re-introduction does push these into the the next revolver time window as my example was manufactured on March 25th of 2007

I wish I had picked up one of the color case hardened variants, but I was too slow and missed out

As to carrying, I tend to carry a 340 if I am going lightweight.

When weight is not an issue or if I want to carry a reload, I usually go 640 or 940

The cross draw position for the weak hand is a very easy draw while seat belted in the car.

The New York reload lets me draw strong hand, weak hand or both hands.

Default Centennals

Can I play? I've posted this pic before but never miss a chance to repost!

A Centennial that has eluded me for many years is a pre mod 42 in its original Red Box

I don't carry this, but I am planning to shoot this at the range next week for the first time. Bought this pre-model 40 from forum member Toad67 awhile back----March of this year, I believe.

I've been known to replace the modern 640-1 Pro in my Lobo Gun Leather Enhanced Pancake with this January '55 shipped Centennial.

I pin the safety lever because my big mitt doesn't want to make it work as designed. I really like the smooth high horn stocks.

Mark,

That engraved 40-1 is stunning. I too would like to find the case color or nickel 40-1. They pop up occasionally here in NC.

I have two of the blued 40-1. Excellent bluing and triggers. Also have a couple of the 42-2. Here's one with the 40-1. But, to get us back on pre-1980....

Here's a 1973 Model 40. Have the box, docs, and original purchase receipt.

Bob,

That's a nice one. It's not just a big hands problem. I need to use a Tyler T or aftermarket grip with my average hands.

The 42-2 does not come with a pin. Do not recall if 40-1 has a pin.

A vintage 42 is at the top of my list- this thread is a stark reminder of that! Beautiful pieces

Here's my Model 42. I haven't lettered it, but the gun is a fairly early version. It has the "High horn"grips, "Bug screw", Flat Latch, and, surprisingly, still has the grip safety deactivation pin under the grips. The grips are numbered to the gun (137XX).

Dang it.

No warning that I'd need a bib to look at that first post.

That nickel Centennial (first post, fourth photo) is a screamer!

I carry my 2007 factory hard chromed Model 40 with Secret Service grips just about every day.
I'd buy a 42 if I ever saw one for sale.

I'll have to figure out how to post a picture.

I really do like these revolvers. I always wanted one I just couldn’t activate the safety. Oh well I guess that means more for the rest of ya.

No.

Centennial's cylinder and barrel are shorter. I would guess Lobo
makes the correct rig for the models before the J-Magnum frame.

Thank you!

That adds to my own limited observation that holsters tightly fitted for the more recent J-frames are a little loose for earlier ones.

Resurrecting a dead thread... Just saw a 042 Centennial in almost mint condition... $430. Is that a good deal???

It has no grip safety and inside the crane it says 042.

Sitting there in a pawn shop! No I don't need it but... I check and the recoil plate has just no markings of firing rounds.

Yup, grab it! Very uncommon variation of the Centennial. Rumored (verified?) as a replacement of very early 642s that were mostly stamped after the original gun did not pass QC due to mismatching coloration.
Plenty of threads here about them.

The 042 uses the JA frame (same as the 442 later.). Model 042 is the same as the model 42 (1952 to 1974) but without the grip safety.. MAYBE one can use +P... I dunno.

Only made in 1992 and early 93. This model was never cataloged and reported at 4415 units produced.

And if one needs parts for it...someone blew up theirs...

Anyway $430 plus tax... $460 I guess... I'll just wait till the price comes down.. I really don't need it and I would never carry it (I have a 442!)

A few that I have. Pre 42 in Ni, Model 42 in Ni and Blue, 40 in Ni and Blue, 642,640-1 .357 and 640 9mm. The Pre 42 and 42 in Nickel were pretty hard to find for me.

Here's a 1973 Model 40. Have the box, docs, and original purchase receipt.
That was a great price back in 1974 - I paid $125 + sales tax for my 42 that year.
