HIGHWAY PATROLMAN, Model 28-2, mfg. ‘69 - ‘71.

Thanks for your years of service, and congratulations on picking up a very nice HP. Lots of HP and Model 28 fans here on the Forum, so you're in good company. I have a few myself, from a first year (and birth year) 1954 HP to a few Model 28-2s from 1974-77. Great and dependable revolvers that are built like tanks. N-frames take a little getting used to with their size and weight, but it's my favorite frame size (I have Model 25, 27s, 28s, 29s, and 57). Also a military Model 1917 and a W&K .44 HE 3rd Model (1926). Your Model 28-2 is in great condition, and should be a fun shooter. Enjoy!

You need a Model 58!

Trooper Joe's gun is a real beauty, but that red ramp insert is a bit troubling for collectors. From the available pictures I don't see a real high polish blue. The previous owner/collector may have applied a couple coats of Ren Wax to give it a bit more shine, but I do understand folks believing it was re-blued when the red insert was installed. Nice HP regardless.

I read somewhere that when the troopers first started using these revolvers, they felt that if the shots fired did not bring down the bad guy, they could always throw the gun at them :).

Trooper Joe

The bad guys would regularly throw their revolvers when empty of ammo on TV "Sgt Preston of the Yukon" Well, King, this case is closed.

I love the Highway Patrolman revolvers. Your red insert does appear to have been installed post factory but I’m also pretty certain that the gun hasn’t been refinished/reblued. Nice gun!

I talked my daughter out of her model 67-1 after she retired. The department gave these to Troopers who shot distinguished expert. I never shot that good.

I love the Highway Patrolman and I have a few of them...

But I definitely love that Model 67 also!

Trooper Joe great acquisition! And great photo of you and your daughter. Thanks to both of you for your service. Beautiful model 28 and that 67 too !
I obtained my 4 screw no dash 28 from a friend with a nice pair of Ahrends grips and a set of vintage targets. Also had TT/TH. No box so don’t know how it came from factory. Ser #S2023xx which I think from the 50s ? I never lettered - maybe someone could chime in with a rough date?
I’m not big on TT/TH so when another friend who owns LGS offered me an N frame box with a service trigger and hammer and a worn pair of magnas I grabbed it. I finally got around to swapping out the hammer and trigger (with instruction and help from another friend) and refurbished the stocks. Icing on the cake was when I happened to join a post about T grips and how pricy the vintage ones were getting, I got a PM from cndrdk offering me a LNIB vintage T grip. Package complete !!

Picked up a 28-2 [1966/67] in like new condition a couple of decades ago, it's a Safe Queen; figure it was a "sock drawer gun". Knew a number of folks bought 28s for this purpose as they were 4" and "cheaper" than a 27 [3 1/2 or 5"] or 19 [2 1/2 or 4'']

If I want a 4" .357 I grab my round butt 686 no dash. Thou I tend to EDC a K-frame 3" 66.

A few years back I lucked into a 4" 27-2; nice enough to be proud of but with enough honest wear to carry. Recessed but not pinned from around 1982. [Transition Gun] Don't know the backstory but figured it was someone's last duty revolver.

Thank you OldSmiths !

I hope to acquire this 28-2 six inch when my buddies estate settles. I took it to S&W for him back in the day of the old repair center (same day service for cops) for an action job and the red ramp.
