Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman price check

OP, revolver prices are a bit depressed right now.
$950 if you live in a free state and that revolver is available periodically.
If you live in a gun hating state and that revolver is not seen in
the wild often, then top dollar as appropriate.
I was thinking $850-$900 range which I'm sure my friend will accept. I'll of course explain to him possible current value opinions since I want us both to walk away feeling positive. Yes, free state here. And I've yet to inspect this revolver which I'm sure it hasn't been shot a lot or abused since my friend is not much of a firearms guy. Plus I'm curious how he acquired this revolver?

He's like me, retired and we met 3 years ago working as contractors at a nuke plant. Got along great and mutual respect for one another. Only lives about 10 miles from me. I'll contact him early next week and make him an offer. He's in no rush obviously.

I went in a S. Mississippi shop two years ago and noticed a 28 up on a shelf behind the counter. I asked to see it and the owner handed it to me to look at. He told me he had it on GB starting at $600.00 and that if I wanted it I could bid on it there. Jr. was with me and noticed they screwed up the listing and that probably no one would see it. He told the shop owner he just bid on it. No one else bid on it and I went back and picked it up for $600.00 a few days later. It is a 28-0 four screw "S" serial number with diamond insert magnas. Someone had added a white front sight insert and a smooth .400" trigger and an action job. It is butter smooth and one of the best revolver shooters I have. I have a friend and fellow forum member who lives near Baton Rouge who comes over occasionally to shoot with me at a little pistol range I have behind my house. He brought over a 28-2 with the exact features I have in my 28-0. We shot each others guns and the results were very similar. I'm wondering who did this work on those two guns. Did Smith do this, was it something regional, or what?

I'd bet it was a local smith Charlie. I've not seen any factory white insert front sights.

Please post a pic of your no dash, that one sounds really interesting! I've never owned a no dash. Sadly sold most of my HPs some years ago, which included a 6" birth year gun. Stupid, stupid, stupid......

Come to Finland, here you can get model 28 EUR 200-500 :)

I paid my own unfired 28-2 EUR 220

Today I finally got around to looking at this Model 28-2 in person. It was in better condition than I anticipated. Not a mark on revolver or grips, tight lock up, doubt it's been fired many times since 1968. Bonus of: in original Box, Owner's Manual, Warranty Card, Screwdriver, & Cleaning Rod. Made him an offer and he accepted. Can't believe I own one again after owning a 6" 42 years ago.

I appreciate all the help this forum provided me with which I shared with seller. It made him feel more comfortable dealing with me since I was telling him information he wasn't aware of. Thx!

I don't follow the current prices, so I'm in no manner qualified to opine on this one other than to note that I can't recall when I last saw a 28 of this vintage as new in the box.

It's easy to get current pricing, IMO.

Go to Gun Broker, click on the "advanced search button". Type in "Smith Model 28" (or similar) & click on "closed auctions".

Keep in mind, just because an auction is "closed", doesn't mean it sold. Look at the bids, see if it's "0 bids" or has a number of bids.

Yes, there's all sorts of variables with this. Condition, box/no box, dash #, etc.

But it'll get you close, IMO.

Hope this helps.

I'd go out on a limb and offer him $500. I know you're not trying to get one over on your buddy who knows. I saw a guy on a smith fb page over the weekend post up and ask about age and value on another model 28. It was a pretty good looking revolver with nothing extra besides the gun. Said he gave $500 for it. Pretty good score I thought. I picked this pair of Hwy Patrolman's up earlier this year and gave bout $700 each. It was a fair deal wish I'm I could've gave a little less but who's complaining.

If you get a chance, shoot some wadcutters out of it. It's like shooting a .22LR, IMO. Just absolutely NO recoil at all. I mean it's like a joke.

I have a dash 2 4". Love that thing!

Congrats on the purchase, you done good from what I see. I just bought a 4" 28 - 2 box papers tools unfired outside the factory for $1,300 on Gunbroker. That's the price you pay in a bidding war across the entire country.

Hi condition 28-2 / box-docs- kit is $1k, Hi condition without $900. You come across any for $600 you better be grabbing them. In my area the
6" guns are about $50 less all things being the same. Personally for field and range gun I'd rather have the 6".
