I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure if I'm in the right place but I'm trying to figure out the value on a revolver I'm interested in. It is a 629-1, 4" looks like great condition at my local dealer. Original box and papers. Being a big fan of Elmer Keith I was looking for a 4", 29 Pre lock....but I do like stainless. Asking is $1,800 which I thought was high...Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can buy a new one for half that. Pre lock is nice but there’s no way I’d pay a 100% premium for it. There are many others out there for much less than that. A quick glance at gunsinternational shows that it is not too hard to find a decent one for around $1,000.

Are you sure that was the price? That seems crazy. With a little patience you can find a similar pre lock 629 for $1000 or maybe a bit less online.

That is vastly overpriced in my opinion. The 629 in 4" barrel length is a common weapon and you can do much better for a quality low round count gun for much less than that. Heck, that much is a bit overpriced for a 629 no dash that is pinned and recessed and low round count. A few years ago I picked up a 5" 29-6 Classic full lug barrel (barrel like a 686 barrel) for $800 out the door at a LGS. It was pristine. The only things I have done to it is to replace the rubber grips with some Culina target "cokes" and I changed the front sight to a gold dot patridge sight. And the -6 version of the model 29 has all the Endurance package modifications too.

Welcome to the S&W Forums. $1800 is about $800 too much for a used, 629-1 with no box. For that kind of money you should be able to find a 629 no dash or a 29 or 29-2 with the original box and documents.

For a 629-1 w/box& papers that is a bit high, however, when was the last time you encountered one "in the wild" comparing a pre-lock (-1)w/ box& papers&(I'm speculating now) tools to 6", lock equipped firearms or - 5 weapons(post mim) just don't fly...IMHO. If you're going to do some serious shooting look for a "endurance" model.

Welcome to the Forum! You've already received some sage advice from some of our Forum gurus that the asking price is way too high, but here's another opinion. The 629-1 was manufactured from 1982-1988 (per the "SCSW 4th Ed."), the 4" bbl. was introduced in 1981, and the IL was not added until 2001. I assume that the revolver has oversized checked Goncalo Alves target stocks, and not rubber Pachmayrs or Hogues. In VG+ condition and with the original box and goodies, I believe that these days $1300-$1500 would be a fair price. If you really want the revolver, you may try going back with a handful of crisp Benjamins and see if they'll dicker. Otherwise, you can keep your eyes open for a 4" .44 Magnum (pre-29) or 29-2, but you'll certainly pay more. The days of finding nice N-frames for under $500 (like I did with my 4" blued 29-2!) are long gone! Good luck!

I paid $1100 for a 629-1 6" anib with all the trimmings. It's now worth $1400 to me, thanks to bigmtman and his glorious elk grips. The original grips are in the box, along with the receipt from my money order for the grips. I may have paid up to $100 high, but the shipping and handling and the serial number having my three favorite numbers at its end was worth it to me. That was a few years ago. Grips were just bought.

Thank you all for your replies. It does confirm that the price is way too high. But, I wasn't sure with things the way they are if it just went crazy. Before I would spend that kind of money, I'd deal with the lock on a new one. I have a 629-3 Classic I bought new and love it, but was thinking Keith gun size and had a hankering to get one. I did look on gunsinternational and it would seem I should be able to pick up what I'm looking for at a reasonable price.
Thank you all again!

For reference
I am not sure what 629s with barrels > 4” are going for because they don’t interest me. However, I recently picked up a cherry 6” 629-4 w/box and factory grips for $900.

$1800 definitely seems high for a 4" -1. The only 629-1 bringing those numbers would be a 3" with box, combats, etc - those can bring $2K.

I will be picking up a p&r in the box no dash 4” 629 for $1350 plus ffl fee this weekend.

I had a 4” 629-1 that I recently sold locally for $1150 including fees. I heartily agree with the other members that the one the op is looking at is very overpriced.

You can get a 629 no dash pinned and recessed in mint condition for around $1,200

Just to give you an idea of how overpriced that gun is, I went by a LGS today to get some sights installed on a revolver and they had an 8 3/8" barrel 29-3, which is a direct correspondent to the 629-1 as far as age goes. It was in very good condition and a low round count gun. It was on consignment with a selling price of $800.

My 629-1 from 1983 is an RSR special run. It came with football Combats, Magnaport, polished trigger, and tuned action. Not sure of today’s value but not too far from the $2k mark.

How old is that pic of 3” with $920 price tag ? I’d buy a hundred of them at that price

Just missed out on a 29-3, 4" @ $1199. Sold the same day it was put up.
Looking around more, getting a feel for what a "decent" price would be on a clean gun.
I want the 4 incher, Elmer Keith gun...should've bought it years ago...when I bought my 629-3 Classic, brand new it was cheaper than all of these. Thanks again for everyone's input!

Best of Fortune in Your Search

Three + years ago, I bought a brand new 29-10, and a few months later, a 27-9. Both are four inchers, with John Culina's grips. I did my usual inside spring changes, and both locks were removed using the lock delete kits from an Arizona Veteran Vendor. At the time, I believe that both revolvers (each) cost under $1,000.

I'd go with a new revolver, unless the pre-owned gun could be checked out in hand at time of purchase. Never the less, good luck with Your search for Your Grail Gun!

Image of new 29-10 & 27-9 added.
