Kit Gun and M 18-4
I just received a little 22/32 Kit GUn serial 31137 via an Guns International sale. Sent my personal check and C&R copy and had the gun in hand 8 days later.
Also bought locally a 18-4 combat masterpiece serial21k9743
Can anyone help with manufacture dates on these two?

Around 1958 for the 22/32 and 1978 for the 18-4.

Ok thanks. That gave me some insight into how to use the Standard Catalog, I just got a digital copy and was a little confused how to look up numbers, just find a gun model in appendices then look for a date range that the gun falls into.

Starting on page 486 of the SCSW4 is a breakdown by gun type with age ranges of each. Quick reference.

You asked for the manufacturing date of yours. The SCS&W provides the approximate manufacturing year.
This gun might get you a little closer date for yours:
Number 31692 is close to yours, is an I frame Kit Gun Pre Model 34 (non-model # stamped) that shipped in June, 1958.
The manufacturing date for this one would be about a month before it shipped.

My number would be about 560 before that.
It does not have a model number although where that normally is located in the frame, is the number 7094 5 then some smaller symbols or numbers, looks lie a small Y above the 7 and tiny 3 below it.
It has the square cylinder release.
From some other comments and what I get out of the catalog I think about 1957
the SC seems to indicate as a J frame, not an I frame.

It is a .22/32 Kit Gun Model of 1953.
One of mine carries serial number 32230 and it shipped in January, 1958. It is not model marked.

At that serial number, we would not expect it to be model marked. According to Jim Carter (Hondo44), our resident expert on the Kit Guns, the lowest known serial number on a Kit Gun with a model number (Model 34) is in the 35100 range. In an earlier post in this thread, he mention one without a model number at serial number 31692 that shipped in June, 1958.
The stamps you mention in the yoke area are a five digit parts tracking number and various marks from fitters and inspectors.

See above. It might have shipped in 1957, but more likely it left the factory in 1958.

I'm not sure where you are reading that, but it is definitely an I frame, not a J frame. The Kit Gun was not converted to the J frame until c. 1960 and those were marked as MOD 34-1.

I stand corrected, it is an I frame. A few minutes ago I went back and compared it to a stainless J frame my wife has and it is rather petite as compared to that J frame. It looks like the major difference is that the I frame cylinder is shorter and of a smaller diameter overall. We have a set of custom aftermarket grips on the J frame and I did not take them off to make a comparison there.

Beginning in 1953, the I and J frame have the same dimensions on the grip frame, so your grips will be interchangeable.

Here is photo of gun and in the Triple K holster I just got for it. Holster was listed for a J frame but I decided to give it a try and it fits the little I frame perfectly.
