Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Edition puts it at 1969-70 (J1-J99999). Beautiful weapon. No idea of value in that condition. Someone will be along with more knowledge than I concerning current value. Good luck.

So I love humpbacks,

I’m trying to confirm a date. I think it’s 1968-69. Has the box tools etc. appears to be unfired.

S/N J9004

Any idea on value?

That’s a beauty for sure in mint like condition! Congratulations. I’ve only recently begun to appreciate the uniqueness of the Bodyguard. Here’s a Pre-38 Bodyguard I bought at the SWCA symposium last Summer.

The label appears to be a bit faded…?
Can you confirm the serial number off the butt of the revolver?

The 5th. Edition of the Standard Catalog confirms that the “J” prefix began in 1969..
And their most recent valuation for the Model 38 is ANIB- $950 and Exc-$600

Congrats on a nice one.

Based on others in the database I'd guess 1969 ship date, but it
could easily be 1970 since S&W didn't ship in s/n order.

My nickel Model 38 s/n J5938 shipped in November 1968.
