Karlj, very neat pictures of your father's revolvers. I always thought that NYPD made the new officers buy their own sidearms rather than be issued by the authority. Back in the day I believe the duty gun was issued and you bought the OD and you had a choice of Smith or Colt. Before the merger in the mid 90's Transit and Housing were separate Dept's from NYPD and operated very differently. Was good friends with a Transit Detective who usually could be found above ground "protecting" a liquid refreshment establishment.

Thanks Joe and tripledipper. I remember my dad telling me, in New York, you were issued your on duty service revolver and the off duty gun was purchased by the officer. The rules were you had to pick from a department certified snubbie. The choice was either a Detect Special or a similar S$W. He chose the Colt because of the extra shot. At the time, The idea was if you have to use your off duty gun it would help another officer identify you if you carried the right piece. He also said that as long as you had one of the two department guns with you, you could carry anything you could qualify. I remember him telling me he would often carry a 1911 or even a SAA in 45LC.

Mr. Kent: Nice old NS. My father, who went into the Border Patrol in 1940, carried one of those. The family story was that as a tyke he unloaded it, let me look at it to my heart's content, and then told me to NEVER ever touch it again. It must have worked as nothing more was said. But that might also have been the beginning of a lifetime of fascination with good revolvers.

Always wondered why the NS got picked as a duty gun--the next size frame came on wheels. My Dad had small hands...

I eventually became an INS agent and firearms instructor myself, and remember having three of the 1950s Colt Border Patrol model guns on the OP frame in inventory. I presume they were long ago torched.

If you ever think about parting with that NS Border Patrol gun I would be interested. There aren't many around, and it would make an impressive keepsake...

BTW he didn't have much good to say about Askins. Not sure where that came from as he wasn't a gun person per se.

I have the original wood grips, but I put them up. I plan on putting some Ahrends boot grips on it.

Here's a 1982 vintage Model 10-8 that was sold to R.M. Vivas by a retireing NYPD Patrolman. He sold it to a friend of mine at an unbelievable value because it looked so bad. Hardly a hint of finish left, badly pitted under the grips. He sent it off to Smith and WEsson for a re-finish in matte blue ($170), while they had it apart they replaced some worn parts. When my friend tired of it, he sold it to me and I shoot the occasional IDPA match with it. My wife likes it to as her bedside gun. It shoots great, and I expect it to last along time, because I'm taking a lot better care of it than it's first owner!

Charlie Askins wrote that at the time-1930s- he was very prejudiced against Smith & Wesson and that he would have issued H&Rs to the Border Patrol before choosing Smiths.

I haven't read anywhere why he picked the New Service over the lighter, smaller Official Police. I understand that the Texas Department of Publice Safety also used .38 special New Service revolvers.

I too wondered about the BP's adoption of the New Service .38. IIRC, the 1917 Smiths and Colts were described as "clunkers." Seems like they would've been a superior duty gun, or at least a hell of a lot more efficient.

Texas HP issued 4" nickeled New Service .38s with a lanyard loop on the butt. Strangely, they issued Colt 1911 .45s before the New Services. So much for progress...

One of my friend's Dad carried this 32-20 when he was a deputy in Knoxville, TN in the 1930's. Barrel was chopped. I took this photo at a big shoot day at his farm in Knoxville.
I know this has to be a pre-war gun, but those look like post war magnas to me, am I wrong?

How about a 1962 vintage Colt Police Positive once in the service of the Royal Hong Kong Police? It is marked on the back strap "RHKP 9261". I had to show it off with my newly acquired RHKP Marine Sector patch that I got from my Hong Kong connection, the same guy who sold me the RHKP Marine Sector holster, pictured with the revolver. Holster is black canvas, nickel hardware, so no mildew or corrosion in the marine environment.



The revolver is chambered in .38 S&W, it likes my handload of 3.1 grains Unique behind a 158 grain LSWC bullet. It is fairly accurate at 15 yards, you can roll soda cans around all day with it at that range. Very little recoil, compact and fun to shoot.

This Model 28, made in 1972 (ser# 96xxx) and was sold to the Anchorage Police Dept. and Issured to me in 1974, It was new when I got it. I was allowed to keep it when I retired and still have it.

3" model 36. Toledo Police Department. I go back this far. It's mine.

This Model 4046 DAO was issued to the <span class="ev_code_RED">Tulsa Police Dept</span> in early 1991 as a "sample" gun.

PRE-64,looks like that one was really worth getting the letter on. Nice . Paddy

Owned / Carried by a friend of mine who I bought it from. My friend had bought it from a friend LEO of his.

Besides being damaged while I was storing it, it was shot out.
Sent it in a few months ago for restoring by S&W....

This is a Texas DPS gun. I bought it in 2003 from a gunshop that had several to choose from. I bought what I thought was the best looking one. Paid $250, wish I had bought a couple of more. My son has "borrowed", I may not get it back. The shop had DPS Ithaca Model 37 shotguns at the time also. I didn't buy one at the time and wish I had.

This 29-2 that I just acquired came with a story. A police detective in Attleboro, MA carried it for a few years in the late 70s/early 80s. After a shoot out with his Dept-issued .38 left the perp still kicking, he decided he needed something with a little more giddyup.

I have 3 police trade-in Smiths. A Honolulu PD 686-3, 4” bbl, sq butt; and 2 Md 65-2, 3” bbl RB, trade-ins from the Lynn, Mass PD. The 65’s are consecutively department numbered guns, # 203 & 204. The 65’s were stamped LPDXXX by the factory and shipped on March 25, 1982 to AAA Police Supply in Dedham, MA, and were part of a 10 gun order for the Lynn, MA PD. Both 65’s have excellent actions, and great lock-up and timing. One of the 65's is pinned & recessed, the other is non-pinned but is recessed.

But I recently won at auction one of Austin P.D. Heavy Duty revolvers. This one is a pre-20 that shipped in 1959 and was refinished in 1976.

my wife has a kansas city mo police trade in the i bought her over 30 years ago. it is a smith k38 that they had the bbls shortened to 4 inches, neat think about it roy jimks mentions them in his book. it shoots very good and has a very slick action on it, some wear but it speaks to you when you pull the trigger.

Back inthe early 90's I had a small gunshop and a distributor offered me S & W Model 10-8's that were trade ins from the Royal Hong Kong Police. RHKPD (if I remember correctly) was stamped on the backstrap. Some of the guns were unissued and I truly regret that the one unissued I kept I sold later. I still know of three still being carried by folks in our small community.

My 66-1 has "MINN STATE PATROL" stamped below the wheel on the left side.......

Shown this before, Austin PD #510 Shipped April 1975. The grips pictured 1st. & 2nd are original to the gun. 3rd. are Kurac Ebony Long gone. 4th. are S&W Factory Combats.

I just picked up this no-dash Model 66 at a gun show this weekend. The gun on the right in the photo is the one I am referring to. The seller said it was Memphis Police Department, but anyone that might have better information would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is a facinating thread ! Here is my Model 65-2 from the late 70's. I dont know which department it came from but it is stamped "E.H.P.D." on the left side. Maybe East Haven or East Hartford ? If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. I cant bring myself to paying the $50.00 for a history letter from S/W . Thanks

Thanks! I got them here : www.gungripsupply.com They are the walnut S&W grips. I like the way they look and feel but they sure bite compared to the Uncle Mikes' rubber grips that came on the gun when shooting .357 Mag ! I usually shoot .38's anyway.

Here is a 2.5" model 66 that is marked S.P.D.I don't know what department that is,but it is a very nice gun.The other is a 686 marked Oakland P.D.again a very nice gun.
