I was looking at a couple of these handguns that are in good condition. Other than some finish wear they are in good shape. Whats an average price for these? Thank you for any help.

I bought two model 28s. A 4 inch and a 6 inch in very good condition for 350.00 but if you add shipping and FFL fee you are talking 400.00 each.

Thanks for the reply. It seems they are in the 400-500 range around here. A local shop has a 4" going for 550 which is too high for me. It seems like the prices are going up. Theres always layaway in these dark financial times

The 28 was for years an inexpensive weapon because of the finish. However in recent years I have seen the prices starting to climb on good ones. They are one of the best shooters you can get your hands on IMHO. The large N frame helps to tame the magnum load and the amount of metal they have helps to offer long life even shooting the heavy loads. Still one of my favorite shooters after all these years is one of my 28 4 inchers.

There was a really nice 6" with diamond magnas and a newer 70's vintage 4" with a little more holster ware but really nice inside at a gun show this weekend for 450.00. That's without even bargaining.
I just didn't have the need, besides, I had just picked up a 60-3 a week before.

chiburi - Make them a reasonable offer....
I do, and most often, they say, okay.
You have nothing to loose.
I saw a Mod 28, 6" with box and stuff,
like new, on line, last June. They wanted
$550, + shipping, I offered $500
and that included shipping
- they said yes.

Seems to me that the 28 is turning into somewhat of a cult gun. Kind of like the 696 was/is. Prices are going way up on the 28, while you can still find nice 27s for actually cheaper than a like condition 28!!

I know where there are 3 Model 28's, all pinned and recessed, two are 4-inch and one is 6-inch. They are priced at $500 each.

They're going for between $350 - $450 where I live. They're going up in price and demand it seems to me. Glad I got my two while they were still fairly common and nobody wanted one.

And it makes absolutely no sense! I owned a couple of Model-28s in the early 70s and actually went through the academy with a six inch version. GSP carried them at that time. They were just a cheaper, utilitarian Law Enforcement version of the Model-27. I owned a very nice six-inch nickel Model 27, one of those I should have never let get away, and there was absolutely no comparison in out of the box exterior fit and finish, as well as the superior trigger of the 27. Cult status is the only thing to explain what the 28s are bringing. I can buy early versions of the Colt Trooper .357 cheaper than a 28. I passed up two good Troopers this year at $350 in excellent condition.

Sir, I don't know if it's universally true, but my 27-2 definitely has a better trigger than my 28-2.
One nice thing about 28s vs. 27s is that the 28's smooth topstrap doesn't chew up holsters the way the 27's "b@stard file" topstrap does.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

What I find interesting is how threads about the 28 always seem to generate more responses than threads about the 27.
I suppose because more of the members own a 28. I guess.

I just paid $6oo for a 95 plus% LEO marked, 27-2 (it IS a 3.5" Nickle, However) from a Detective friend of mine. Several Months ago, I bought his personal 28-2, in four inch, for $350. The 28 is in exceptional condition- and I consider it a bargain. The trigger is also very smooth (as I remember- it's locked up & not readily accessable, or I'd do a side by side for ya). But I'd place the 28's in the $350-$450 range, easy... but then, they really 'Trip My Trigger'! LOVE THEM OL' MAGNUMS!!!

Probably the same reason Mary Ann received more interest than Ginger. The common man recognizes those strong qualities.

I picked up a very nice (but, sadly, no box or papers) 4” Model 28 about two years ago for $450 plus tax and MSP fee, a very good price locally, at a gun shop near my home. I haven’t seen another for sale since then and I’ve been offered more for mine by folks looking for one.
In Maryland, there isn’t much in the way of private sale advertising available (the “big” newspaper, the Baltimore Sun (or “Scum” as we like to call it) banned classified ads for firearms sales years ago. So, unless you luck into a private sale, things are a bit thin on the ground here for FTF sales. That drives up the prices as gun shops have to make some $ off the sales. That said, if you could find a FTF sale on a Model 28, I’d estimate about $50-100 less than I paid.
Matt
BTW, I’ll cast my vote for Mary Ann.

The ones in very good condition always bring $450-$500 around here (even without the box)and don't stay on the shelf long.

Oh, as an update: (I don't know what box I hit to bring up my quote- but I'm glad it popped up)... But Did get out my only model 28 (a dash 2), and compared it to my latest 27-2--- The 28-2 was even smoother and better on the trigger! So I loosened up the adjustment screw on the 3.5" Nickle 27... and evened up the score a notch 'r two. They BOTH have sweet triggers. All my ol'd P&R Smiths are sweet. I have the 66 no dash in 4", the last P&R 19,the 6" -4, an old 'S' series Long Barreled 27'2,& others...The only one that was troublesome was a 'S' series Model 29-2, that was Overstamped- maybe a factory re-work... It HAD a hair trigger!Push-off, they call it. I got it down to a fairly hefty pull now. I kinda miss it going 'KaBloom! if I blinked too loud! It really put the "DANG!!!" in DANGerous... But all of my guns are P&R Magnums- (except the Colt Anaconda), and All are nice, smooth, factory trigs (except the ol' 4" 29-2). I believe, that even in a sucky economy, ANY nice, pretty, old P&R Mag will be a good investment, a good friend, and a Joy to have around. I have NO experience with anything made after around 1980- & so far, have little desire to do so...But it WOULD be nice to SHOOT a late model S&W Cannon. After all, It's Time For A NEW Dirty Harry Movie-

Jerry, that was one of those lucky timing things. The owner and his better half disagreed on the need for the gun, and so for maritial harmony, the gun left. I just luckily happened to be standing in its path.
It came wih the Ahrends. I was so dumbfounded by the price, I didn't even ask about the original grips.
