I recently acquired a 6" nickel 27-2. It's a beautiful gun,BUT. The top strap is checkered as it should be. The barrel, however,is ribbed,no checkering. The only other N-frame .357 that I know of is the HP,but the bbl on mine is marked .357. No HP doo-dads. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

That sounds about right. The cross cut is very faint on some later guns. If the barrel is marked "S&W .357 MAGNUM", it can't be anything else. Get some good light and a magnifying glass and I bet you see cross cuts.

I believe this lack of definitive cross checkering on the 27-2 barrel rib was fairly prevelant during the late 1970s and early 1980s. I've seen two such examples, both made in the late p&r period. Interestingly, one example had almost no cross cuts on the flat portion of the barrel rib, but the cross cuts got more pronounced on the front sight ramp. Quality control issue??

I agree with chad, diamondback, and trout. I've seen lots of them like that.
