Who here has fired/owned one of the new Smith and Wesson Classics 29's? I am going to buy a 29 soon, and would like some opinions on the pinned and recessed, cheaper, and increasingly more rare 29-2 versus the new 29-10 with the security of being newer, more prepared for heavy rounds, and more readily available. I haven't much of an issue with the IL, as it isn't a CCW, but I would like to know if i should bite the bullet and get the new classics 29-10 or the venerable -2.

Also, I'm looking for 6.5", Blue.

Thanks, Scott

If you want total class, get a 29-2. If you want a good looking, well made (minus the stupid lock which detracts from the looks IMHO ) gun that will take far more pounding with magnum loads get the new one.

If you handle both (IMHO) you will find the 29-2 has a better trigger, finish (better blueing), and will take any 'normal' load the new one will handle.

I have the 29-2 with a round count of 8,000 and only replaced one hand. Works well, shoots well and for my money is better than any new 29.

Good luck.

I had an earlier 29, can't remember the dash though. It shot fine with regular .44 Specials and most factory magnums. I bought some Cor Bon "bear killers" Really haevy hot .44 Magnums. It would skip timing pretty regularly. So...I guess to answer your question, for normal shooting, I think any dash model will serve you well, if you plan on hotrodding it, even a little, get a newer one.

I own pre-29s through the 29-10 that I bought in November 2006 and have put over a thousand rounds through since then. Most were handloads in the 1100 fps range (240 gr bullet), but a lot of factory 240 grain loads too. I find the 29-10 to be just as good or better than the old ones when it comes to shooting.

WOW, OK.

That's good enough for me. I never thought I'd consider a "newer" S&W BUT I don't own all the models my fellow forum member does and I just figured how long it's taken me to fire 1000 rnds of 44 mag.
Three years.
So, I can't be the one to disagree.

Let's see what the IL haters say now!
