Hello All,
happy holidays and blessings as appropriate! Recently, my parents are interested in self-defense. At the gunshow this weekend they were offered for purchase a Smith & Wesson Model 87, 5 shot, 0.38 Sp. The gun is nickel or stainless with pearl (like) handles. My parents don't know much about guns and I can't find anything on the Net about this...

So, did S & W make the Model 87 or this guy trying to BS the newbies?

Sir, the Model 37 is a five-shot .38. Sounds like someone just misread the model number.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Thanks Ron, I thought of that too. But I was wondering if S & W might have made a special run...

I will email folks for more info...

Nothing in the SCSW that goes beyond the Model 73. However, as we all know, never deal in absolutes with S&W.

Get a jewelers loop and a strong light. You will probably see it is a model 37. Does the barrel say Airweight on the right side?

There is no Model 87. The highest model number in the two-digit model numbers is, I think, the Model 80, which is a pellet gun.

Here is the list of S&W non-firearms:

Mod 77 - 22 Cal Air rifle
Mod 78 - 22 Cal CO2 Pellet Pistol
Mod 79 - 177 Cal CO2 Pellet Pistol
Mod 80 - 177 Cal CO2 BB Rifle

I believe Taurus made a Model 87. It could say 38 S&W special cartridge?
