Default Project S&Wm28HP***Updated 09/11/09 w/pics (pg. 6)

Project revolver, S&W model 28, Highway Patrolman (cir. 1972), 4" barrel, with target grips.
This is a project I had been thinking about for some time.
A Couple months ago I asked Magna-Port if they would do the job? Mag-na-port International--Home Page
Magna-Port stated they would do the work. I explained what I had in mind, and this is the result so far.

Here is what is completed so far:
*Barrel has been cut (2 5/8") & crowned
*Front sight re-installed
*C&S Extreme rear sight installed C&S Extreme Duty Fixed Rear Sight without Dots for S&W Adj Sight Revolver K-L-N Frames
*Grip converted from square butt to a round butt
*Patrick Grashorn's Elk grips installed Home

Recently I received a call from Magna-Port. The Gunsmith asked that I pick up the Highway Patrolman, and shoot it, to see if the sights are regulated. I fired 75 rounds of various ammunition, and everything worked out just fine.
I cleaned up the revolver, and took a few pictures before returning the revolver to Magna-Port for final finishing. The Highway Patrolman will be refinished with a (similar) factory bluing.
I'll post more pictures when the job is completed.
Enjoy.
S&W Highway Patrolman original configuration.

Project S&Wm28HP (incomplete)

Absolutely fantastic mod's IMO! You really thought this one out. Lots of folks don't like Magnaported weapons, but I'm not in that crowd. It does wonders for controlling muzzle flip and recoil, allowing for faster follow up shots, especially with a .357. My factory Magnaported 3" 60-10 is fairly pleasant to shoot with full power Speer Gld Dot 158 gr. loads and a set of Uncle Mikes full wrap around grips.

Make sure you come back and post pics of that Custom 28. I LOVE IT!!!

Congrats on a great job! You did well Sir.

The ONLY thing I'd do different is I would have a brushed Hard Chrome finish applied to it. Magnaport sends there guns to Accurate Plating & Weaponry for this service. If you are going to be packing that baby the finish will take all kinds of abuse and hold up for MANY years. You're Smith though and you set it up how you want it.

It's obvious that Magnaport still knows how to work on guns! Great looking revolver, may be the first time I've see a 28 like yours.

Nice work on the barrel.

I would not add "ports" to a defense revolver.

That revolver still has enough wieght to comfortably handle any 357 load.

Would love to see the finished project!!!!

Sweet! About how much was the barrel cut, sight re-attachment, and re-crown? I have a similar project in mind.

I have thought of doing something similar with a Brazillian 1917 that I have. There is just something about a big bore snubbie...

Perhaps a "brushed hard chrome finish" would look good.

whitecoyote,

I think the hard chromed , brushed finish would look fantastic and be the icing on the cake to that BA custom 28 of yours sir. The brushed hard chrome finish is tough as nails and looks just like stainless.
I had 2 pistols hard chromed and the Browning HP worked over by AP&W back in the mid 80's. The finishes and work were fantastic!

Bob Cogan, the owner is a no BS guy who will stand behind his work 100%. When I lived in Clearwater, Fl, which is where his shop used to be he gave me a personal walking tour of his shop and we shot the bull for way over an hour. Great guy whom you can trust. Also him and his crew are all master craftsmen. You WILL NOT be dissapointed with the finish and I think it will really look sharp on that 28. It'll hold up to extremely hard use for Many, Many years. I sold the Blackhawk that was chromed and like an idiot sold the HP off to fund a Ruger #1 in .338 Win Mag. Really miss that HP!

Please make sure you post finished pics when you have that beauty completed.
I absolutely love it!!!

Respectfuly,

SG

Whitecoyote, your finished M28 is not unlike the current NiteGuard models offered by S&W, particularly with the round butt and C&S rear sight. Yours will be all steel of course. Bob!!

Well, I went to Magna-Port today to inquire about the "brushed hard chrome". Unfortunately the S&W 28 had already been sent out for rebluing.
No big deal, it was my original plan anyway. I can always change it at a later date.
When I get the 28 back, I'll be sure to post pictures.
Thanks for all the replys.

I'll admit, that is a very nice looking and well done custom, but add that I'd have a hard time parting with the donor gun as it looks pretty nice in the original configuration. Unless I had another one...

That is one serious looking gun! It turned out GREAT! Now what kind of leather are you going to get to carry that bad boy? I wouldn't hesitate to do that to a 28 if it turned out like that. How long did it take to complete? Great piece and enjoy!

The holster I was thinking of getting for this S&W mod. 28 is a Bell Charter-Oak holster.
Any other sugestions?

Awesome gun! I'm impressed. Now we are gonna want to know how it shoots. Handsome carry piece. The holster looks like a winner also.

Looks like a nice holster, but personally I would want one with a closed bottom to protect the end of the barrel from seatbelt buckles, keys, etc, but if you like it go for it! I am no expert on holsters, Heck I'm not gonna tell you what to buy, you definetley know what your doing by the looks of that 28.

I fired 75 rounds of various ammunition prior to the revolver being completed. Magna-Port wanted me to check to see if the sights were "regulated" for the distances I would be shooting the 28. Well this S&W 28 shot perfect for me, it was right on. The 28 was then returned to Magna-Port for final finishing.
I will take it out again soon, and shoot it. When I do, I will report back with a range report. I'm sure the results will be no big surprise.
Thanks for all the responses, and support!

That's what I should have had for my BUG - a second 28 to balance me! (Some say I'm unbalanced no matter what I carry).

Beautiful work. There's something about a short barreled N frame that just says "business".

Thumbs up nice mods..........

That looks good.........almost a shame to "pretty it up" as it looks mean as Hell and full of attitude now. I have also used Accurate Plating and Weaponry in the past. Blue is good for me or Black-T (that's the shtuff)! Hard Chrome is on a Glock 20 that I own and have carried extensively in Alaska and on the salt waters in the state. It is tough as nails but lacks the appeal (to me) of a dark colored gun. And, I will be danged if I can see any Mag-na-ports. Are they slated for install, or was that an assumption? In any case, NICE revolver!!!!!!!!

Nice Looking "Piece"..
I realy like the looks of the cut down barrel & the crown plus it looks right with the Round Butt convertion & the Stag Grips just set it off..
A Tyler T Grip might be in order for that "Hawg"
Congrats on a well thought out Plan..

Excellent looking revolver. Did you have the mainspring screw replaced with a hex? The grips set it off nicely.

Yes, Magna-Port replaced the mainspring screw as part of their round butt conversion.

BELL CHARTER OAK CUSTOM HOLSTERS (607) 783-2483

Available for Short barrel large frame revolvers. S&W N frames, 625-10, 327, 25-5, S&W 29, 329, Taurus 450/455 and similar frame sizes with 2 to 2 1/2 inch barrel lengths. Thumb break $20.00 additional. Dark chestnut or black finish. Pictured with customized Colt New Service .45 LC with 2 1/2 inch barrel.
Your Model 28 Magna Port conversion is one of the most impressive looking custom jobs I've seen in quite awhile. As many of you know, decades before S&W finally embraced the concept of big bore reduction guns, Chic Gaylord and I championed their value as a defensive working revolver. I chuckle every time I recall the mucky mucks from S&W and Colt who told us back then "those designs are not marketable". Go figure? If you live long enough, you get to laugh at your detractors. That's my Colt .45 New Service snub pictured in the TIGER scabbbard. It is the epitome of compact powerhouses. Best of luck with your new cannon! Cheers!
