Measuring barrel length

Ok, this may seem a bit like a silly question, but I saw what appeared to be a 6 inch barrel but the seller insists its a 6 1/2 inch barrel.

Do you measure from the front of the barrel to the face of the frame
OR
measure from the front of the barrel to the front of the cylinder.

Revolvers- muzzle to cylinder face

Auto's- muzzle to rear of chamber/ front of breech face when the action is closed
 
Also, keep in mind that S&W changed barrel lengths on several models from 6 1/2" to 6" circa early 1980s. Model 29 and 25-2, for example.

Sometimes difficult to tell from individual weapon, unless actually measured.
