S&W Model 66 in Black Stainless Steel
1917 0071111.jpg
1917 01111111.jpg I have a Model 66 that I have had for some time. I was attracted to it as it was a stainless steel gun in black. Over the years I have tried to find information on the gun and cannot find any reference to black stainless steel nor have I ever found any other examples. Does anyone have any info on this? Is it rare? As a follow up I have removed the grips and inspected the entire gun under a magnifying glass and can find no CSP numbers. Any help will be appreciated.

I've seen "blued" Model 66's before - they are rare - the factory K-Comps come to mind, but I've not seen one like yours...here is the only thing I found on-line, the more knowledgeable will provide better information later:
Value of a S&W Model 19 - THR
Best of luck,
Dave

Your gun was made in 1976. Sometime in the last 33 years someone sent the gun to birdsong or one of the other gun finish coating companies and had it coated. It's that simple. It may even be dura-coat, which when applied properly ,is very durable and wear resistant, as the name implies.
Mystery solved. Enjoy your great old shooter.
Regards Allen

The Connecticut State Police had special order blackened stainless model 66's.
Most were sold off when they went to semi auto's. Alot of those sold off reportedly had the black finish bead blasted off.
The serial number range for these is in the SCSW IIRC. If yours is one of those, it has a bit of collector value too. Regards 18DAI.
