I have a line on a model 17-5 that appears to be in excellent condition.

My question is .... is a Model 17-5 a reasonably good find or should I keep looking for an older example.

Am I also correct that the 17-5 would not have a pinned barrel and is a late 80's vintage.

Sorry the picture's not mine.

ANY 17 is a good 17. The 17-5 came out in 1988. It has the radiused stud package along with some of the other endurance upgrade features. No barrel pin either. If the price is right for you, you should buy it. You can always add another one when the time comes.

Hi 17-5 is an awesome k22 it has the heavier barrel then the regular Model 17,s its quite a bit thicker as it would be more heavy duty i have one its a great shooter as most 17's are they were only made for a year then 17-6 full-lugs were made.I bought mine new in 88 and would'nt trade it for anything put thousands of rounds through it and still looks like new.

I am fortunate enough to have both a 17-5 and a 17-6. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by saying the 17-5 has a "heavier barrel then the regular Model 17,s". My 17-5 looks just like Hawkeye10's photo of a 17-4, with the exception that my 17-5 is not pinned.

Are there actually different weight barrels on the model 17's? I'm not talking about the full underlug on the 17-6, but are there variations in barrel thickness on the non-underlug 17's?

Thanks,
Lou

Yes,

look at the OP's thumbnail. You can see the front ramp is much larger than that on Hawkeye's gun, and the barrel profile is actually heavier too.

I have a 17-6, 6 inch barrel #BDZ---- and a 17-6, 4 inch heavy barrel #BEF3--- both without the full lug.

The earliest 17-6 that I have with the full lug is 8 3/8 inch barrel #BEF0---.

Go figure, Larry
