Hello,

I recently picked up a used Model 17-8 10 round 22lr. I've found that about 1-2 out of ever 10 shots does not fire. Looks like a light strike to me. The round always goes off on the 2nd go around. I also found that when shooting in SA the reliability is higher an it almost always fires.

I'm using CCI MiniMag ammo. I run the same ammo in several other 22lr firearms and it is nearly flawless.

Any ideas on why this might be happening?

Check to see if the mainspring screw (strain screw) has backed out. This is the main cause of misfires. If tight, it may have been shortened by a previous owner.

Things to look for with a rimfire revolver suffering apparent light strikes:
Debris/dirt/residue/old lubricant under the extractor or in the chamber counterbores.
Excessive end shake or head space.
Firing pin protrusion/length.
Tight strain screw.
Shortened strain screw.
Aftermarket main spring.
Gummy/dirty lock work.

Is it the same cylinder every time, or does it vary? If the cylinder is dirty, that could be a problem. Possibly an aftermarket hammer spring, too.

Not the same one every time. I did give a good cleaning but it didn't help. I'll dig into the spring issue as you and other suggested.

Owned a number of double action rimfires from most of the manufacturers over the years. Not sure I've had one that was 100% reliable in double action. Smith is better than most but even they will do it on occasion.
